❧Reason of death:
Xiāng lived in the far countryside. He played out in the forest every day, coming back with bruises and cuts and slowly learned to treat them with random plants he found. One day, while climbing trees, he got a huge gash on his leg. He cared for it as usual, but he had used the wrong plant. The cut became infected, and he was hospitalized. The hospital was a long distance from his hometown so he didn’t have many visitors. Xiāng was bedridden for quite a while, so to pass the time he made paper cranes with the goal of 1,000. According to legend, making a thousand cranes could grant a wish. Every night he would sneak out the window on to the toon tree next to his room to hang the finished cranes, like a guardian spirit. One night was extremely stormy, and the cranes began to blow off from the tree. Xiāng frantically climbed out to retrieve them. The pouring rain had made it impossible to climb back up the window so he took shelter under the branches of the toon, went to sleep, and never opened his eyes again.

❧Reason for being a tree spirit: To continue hanging cranes and watch over the people he loved, who still visit the tree everyday.
