Description Do I need to introduce Mr. Tough Guy in the Dwarven company? I guess not.
For some reason or another I always expected him to go "Pity the Foo'" when watching the Hobbit movies.

Hi there! Thanks for the compliment ...
This isΒ a pastel drawing on a A3-sized paper. I took a few of the photo references from the net and combined them into a "new" picture. Basically, the head is based on one picture and the clothes are then added from a few other references.

No prob.
By the way ... If you'd like some introduction to using pastels as a drawing technique, you can actually look up the first few pastel drawings in my gallery and read the accompanying text. I documented what I learnt in art class about the medium together with the works and exercises I did ...

Hm.
I took a look at my first pastel drawings to see if the accompanying text does indeed provide the details I thought were there and ... er ... they are not really.

So here goes ...Β
Dry pastels are a "covering" technique, which means you build up your drawing starting with the dark colors and then put the lighter colors on top. That is the most important bit to know actually. You can really make your drawing come alive by putting clear white for the lightest parts on top of everything else.
Pastels have to be fixed using a fixing spray. If you want to work "on top" of an existing part of your drawing without affecting the drawing that is already there, you can fix a part and then add layers on top. You cannot do that indefinitely, of course, as the paper will at some point reach a saturation point.Β
You can mix and blend colors by smudging them (using cloth, cotton wads or just your fingers).
That's the basics, I suppose. Then it is down to ... experimenting. There's no way to learn than to get dirty. Just go ahead and do it ...

You're always welcome to ask questions if you like. Send on a private message; I'd be happy to help out.
Cheers!Β

Leuk, hee?
