Description More development sketches for commission. link Lunar ponies have bat-style wings kind of like a dragon's. Since this commission involves Lunar pony and since I hope to do a couple dragon pieces this year, I decided to go and study the source of inspiration for this style of wings. Bats.

Ignoring the cartoon-style bats that every kid scribbles in the margin of their homework around Halloween, I've done almost no art of the little flying rodents. So today pulled up a reference book from my library and started making study sketches. About an hour and half later I had this.

Geez Baron, you call this a simple study sketch but really what I see here is a zoology text book grade illustration and then some. This is incredibly detailed for study sketches to the point where other artist could rely solely upon this for reference; and if this was your intent, I and many more aspiring doodlers must thank you for your efforts!

Well, bats are as closely related to rodents as we are to dolphins, but these are great studies! It's awesome that you take the commission's accuracy so seriously that you look up the actual animal rather than the style of the show as main reference.

Such happy bats! They look so silly when they fly.

Just study sketches that I learned how to in school. Like I said in the posting this took about hour and a half and some of that was spent on reading the book.

This will be a fairly significant piece so I prefer to keep the variables and surprises to a minimum when start final piece.
