The composition is excellent. You carried the lighting off well, and the armor is wonderful. Well done.

Your welcome. It is rare to see work dealing with armor/barding for unusual animals. Is this guy from one of your series? : )

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bastard--Prince In reply to AndrewGainey [2014-05-20 21:21:11 +0000 UTC]

true, I don't see much of it on here (animal barding), although making it for sculptures I've done before and it was pretty fun :>

this guy isn't in any of my current series, although I do have one idea that may become a series eventually that's set in feudal Japan with supernatural stuff. he might make a cool character in that. this painting was a test of MangaStudio software but the idea was inspired while I was reading Eiji Yoshikawa's book "Taiko", when he mentions a fearsome samurai general known as "the Tiger of Owari".

Most forms of armor sculpting are a blast. : ) It always feels special to design something new or making an elegant twist on a classic concept, in this case I cite the generals helmet giving it a good field of view.

I'll have to check out Taiko.

Japanese legends make great inspiration for stories. Setting up a yokai court could be a fun way to have your tiger general. Mangastudio has a nice package of features and a great deal of support for custom tools, at least from what I've seen so far. Either way it will be fun to see what you do.

have you seen Jeff de Boer's work? he made actual scale-accurate samurai armor for cats and mice, and dogs. not meant to be worn ofc, but as artpieces. pretty awesome stuff. this pic is also inspired by his work.

Taiko's a tome, but if you would like a romanticized saga of the Sengoku period about the 3 unifiers of Japan, especially Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it's one of the essential novels. ^^

thanks! yeah, I would like to make a story involving various yokai including kitsune, tanuki and various ghosts or akuma. and maybe kami as well. I don't see too many manga about it. :>

so far MangaStudio's handling for lineart is the best for me and my style. really awesome. but to make my stuff I rely on 3 programs usually, not just MS.

I had not heard of him, but having seen his work I won't soon forget it! I can see the inspiration. Good choice.

I'm looking forward to making some time for it.

That sounds like it will be a blast!

I'm the same way. Mangastudio, Painter, and Sketchbook. Occasionally I truck in photoshop for some of its specialties.

his work is pretty amazing. I guess that is what training as a jeweler can do when you move on from jewelry to armor 8D

it's worth a read for sure if you're interested in Japanese history. you have to take some with a grain of salt as it's fictionalized but many events and the people in it are quite real. he's written a good novel on the legendary Musashi as well.

I'll look into that when K&C and BP are a bit more established

yeah, each one's good for different jobs, painter is good for FX, MS for lines, PS for colors and correction. never tried Sketchbook before, though...Β

I agree. It explains the meticulous workmanship.

I am, though it has been some time since I last studied it. I downloaded the sample from Amazon. Now to find some time. ; )

Sounds like it will be fun. It's always a wise idea to avoid overstretching on commitments.

Sketchbook is good if you want to set up line work in a traditional animation stile. It has a pen mode that operates a bit like using the spline ruler function for MS. I used it much more before I had MS.
