Description WIP of an 3" edible frog made with fondant, wafer paper and dragees. There is a floral wire armature only because this little fellow has plans to travel the USA next year and I need him to hold up to checked baggage. Otherwise I'd use an edible armature like spaghetti pasta.

These shots allow me to see how the critter's personality will photograph and allow me to make any adjustments before he gets painted with cocoa butter.

I also need to make a style comparison between him and the reverse painted fishy. The earlier water test shows me how much of the frog will be submerged. [link]

This will probably be the last image from the How-To until it is published. The fish and frog are support elements, so I'm happy to share a sneak. But the rest is the main focus, so it will be a couple months before I can post.

Nice work, it has all the warts I would expect

The bumps don't stand out as much now that he's painted.
They're more a skin texture at this point, but they add a nice bit of contrast.

I am curious, that if you can see the other fish from the back side, through the glass, will whatever is in the vessel obscure that, or will you be painting it in the right side so it looks like a fish and not a while fish shape from what I am assuming is the front side of the vessel.

The WIP shows more of the inside of the dish than will be seen in the final.
The final image is planned to be closer to the view shown in the water test: [link]

Ah, wonderful, but, if that were not the case would you be able to paint the fish so it would show all that color on both sides of the painting?

Battledress In reply to SavageArtsVal [2010-12-03 02:19:22 +0000 UTC]

Thank you... and I can absolutely paint on top of the white on the inside of the glass.
I'll do that in another project - and I'll be using an airbrush in addition to painting by hand.

The biggest issue is the difference in expansion between the cocoa butter and the glass. There is a danger of cracking if the painting is too thick. But, the crack is easy to fix and as long as the glass is clean before you start, the cocoa butter doesn't flake off.

Glad you approve.

I don't know if he's gonna have the crazy bright colors - he needs to "be there" but not take away from the lotus flower....
Decisions, decisions!

Groan.

Thanks.

He's painted now, but not without mishap.
I'm working in the house instead of my studio cuz I'm lazy.
Kitty Kat got way to curious about what was going on.
The tell-tale paw prints led me across the table, down the chair and across the floor to the culprit who was caught green-pawed.

Looks exciting! And are those the little crunchy ... yogurt coated balls you get in some chocolate...or yogurts!

What a fabulous idea to use them that way!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Battledress In reply to annajordanart [2010-12-02 21:39:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

The balls are uncoated dragees. Think unflavored, uncolored mini jawbreakers.
They are great for texture, eye balls, the center of flowers.... I've produced advertising images with "jewelry" out of the coated versions: [link]

Oh right! That makes more sense, less likely to go off and soggy-stale!

I've recently found myself playing with a lot of Fimo so maybe if I get a bit more confidence I shall dip my fingers into food sculpting!

I;m trying to find some miniature bells at the moment, around 5mm, hopefully smaller if I can find. But its a case of trawlling through the net, but hey, thats what days off are for, right!

Fondant is like colored play-dough.
Then there's Gum Paste and Pastillage... they are more like air-dry clay and dry rock hard.

Who doesn't like playing with their food?

Isn't it odd how looking back at innocent childhood photos completely change as you mature? I mean, what on earth were my parents thinking when they snapped this!!!
