Description This is a commission of a journal from the Disney movie, Atlantis-The Lost Empire.
This one took some time to make because there was not much to go off of. A lot of research went into this one to get it to come out as accurate and durable as possible.

It contains over 300 pages of natural parchment and is bound in Italian leather. It is framed in metal and embellished with a gold centerpiece emblem.
The spine is supported by a finial rod that the purchaser had machined to match the original from the movie.
The journal is finished off with a workable clasp, aged and buffed out to a low sheen.

This was a commission piece. The goal was to create this so that it was durable and as accurate as possible.
Many thanks!

This book looks amazing, congrats! Hope you don't mind my asking, but what technique did you use to sew the signatures? I've been looking at the pictures and I just can't figure out how you got the spine to come to a tight point like that.

BCcreativity In reply to GothKittyLady [2014-01-23 03:04:50 +0000 UTC]

ok, so this one was difficult to say the least. I had to do some research to find the best way to successfully bind this without the text block falling apart.

I sewed the text block loose so that when I hammered the spine, I could shape it into the V shape I needed to replicate.

Thank you oh so much. That is very kind of you. It did take some time to create. Lots of research went into this book. I wanted it to be durable and functional while still accurately portraying the one from the movie. Cheers

Now all you need is an Atlantean crystal concealed in the spine and it will be truly complete. That's how the book managed to stay intact for so long.

All geeking aside, this is GORGEOUS work. I'm almost halfway through Cornelia Funke's "Inkdeath," the third and final book in her "Inkheart" series. The main character's father is a bookbinder and I'm sure he would have LOVED to see this particular piece. I understand it must have been difficult to make. The angled spine must have provided many a complication. Thank you for making such a faithful work of art. I'll be spooling through your gallery to see what other remarkable treasures await.

Question: How can I go about commissioning you for this exact replica? I am very interested. Is it best for me to note you?

BCcreativity In reply to Wonnderland [2013-02-19 16:41:33 +0000 UTC]

I am flattered, but I only create one of each. That is the appeal of my creations.
Each one is one of a kind.

Wonnderland In reply to BCcreativity [2013-02-19 21:18:57 +0000 UTC]

So you would never recreate this book again? Even if the customer would ask for it to be slightly different? (I think that's how I understood your previous comment, please correct me if I'm wrong.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BCcreativity In reply to Wonnderland [2013-02-19 22:46:29 +0000 UTC]

I took a lot of time to research how this book could even be possible. The creators of this art obviously knew nothing of bookbinding
and created this fictional book with flair for the movie.
It took almost a month to create after the research and trial and error stage.
The owner of this commission spent a lot of time and money and appreciates the fact that they own the only one created by BCbookbinding.
I want all my buyers to feel the same way.
It is not fair to them if I create it again. It's not as special. Not to mention I like to move forward with new adventures.
The only other creation that I almost made twice was the Enchiridion from Adventure Time. I was offered 5 times the
original price which was tempting, but I have to stay true to my word.
I am so sorry.

Wonnderland In reply to BCcreativity [2013-02-19 23:44:27 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I understand now! Thank you for clarifying that. I didn't comprehend earlier. I have been looking for a replica for quite sometime and have made some variations of my own. I was hoping to be relieved and purchase a commission regardless of price. I was leaning more towards a Post Screw binding anyways. I'm sure the hardest part had to have been the spine, no?
Since you don't plan on ever re-creating this book, are there any possible tips, experiences, or complications that you could share to someone like me? I would love to know for future reference. If now, I understand that as well.

Your books are fantastic. This one is particularly interesting, as I've never seen an angled spin like that before. How did you cut the folios to size, and get them lined up exactly? My mind is blown be how amazing this book is
