I don't understand the middle mouthpiece... horses usually open their mouths so they can RESIST the bit, why would someone want that? You want the horse to accept the bit and soften their mouth, creating less of a fight.Β

I might mini-rant about random things in this post and I'm sorry..but this drawing reminds me of so many things that I just need to get out publicly *rolls away*
I ride, yes , yet I still cringe seeing these things..I don't believe in these practices at all. Especially those little..boot thingies they put on Saddlebreds or other high action horses to make them move better(?).
Some people go crazy when it comes to making a horse 'the perfect ride' or 'the perfect one' in general...its bs. I taught my gelding (a 15 year old rescued Morab, named Bailey who's just a little fuzzball, with big doe eyes), to collect. I did it all bitless at first. teaching him to move on the 'bit' (when there was no bit, so he was basically just communicating with me through my hands..i think..idk...I dont get lessons and all that so I just wing it). Once he learned to give and be obedient and make contact with me and communicate (I make this sentence sound so..horrible but i dont want it to be that way. By give and obedient, i mean he isn't trying to work against me constantly), i put in the bit because i was confident he wouldn't hurt himself by throwing up his head if he got confused etc. Collection is the hardest thing i have ever taught him and is the only physically difficult thing i will ever teach him, because that's all i needed him to learn. So you don't need big fancy, spirit breaking contraptions to teach a horse something. People tend to forget, like you basically stated, that horses feel pain and will express it but have been trained not to. Because if they do, many are punished for bad behavior, when they are simply trying to communicate with their so called partner. Ignorant people, ignore a horse's behavior. Ignorant people do this to horses. So that means, ignorant people...do not need horses. I believe people who do this to a horse, need to experience something like it, understand what they put their horse through. Horses might be big and strong, but you can break their soul and mind like you would break a stick, before you even actually damage their body itself.
Honestly, when i ride, I prefer to go bitless and a bareback pad...cause i can't afford one of those $600+ treeless saddles. Because my gelding is supposed to be in his 'prime', yet being abused for 6+ years..he has the body of a 20 year old but the mind of a 15-16 year old. So i don't like to use things that dig into him. However, if he has a wild hair, or we're going on a trail ride that I know i will gallop him on (which is every time), i use my endurance saddle. The tree is more flexible and it's lighter.Β There are peaceful and not tormenting ways to ride and train...but stuff like this makes the equine world look bad and horrible. I make my step dad use a bitless bridle (while I am around, when i go to my dad's i have no clue what he does..sadly) because he doesn't understand that my horse will move forward with the slightest touch. So he's constantly pulling back on the reins and just being (excuse my language) a jackass basically. My step dad also believes he doesn't have to listen to me, because im 16 what do i know about the horse i spend every waking moment around, cause you see he's the one who worked on horse farms blah blah blah *mindless things that don't make him a better horse owner*.Β Mind you this is the guy who turned down riding a trained in dressage(one sport i can't stand. It's pretty...but painful.) Andalusian stallion, because he didn't want to ride in the english saddle. Yep. He's picky and ignorant.
There are practices in both WESTERN and ENGLISH that i do not like, but you have to look past the bad and into the good. Riding can be a beautiful thing between man and equine, it's not all a house of horrors ya know.
I hope you dont feel like i was targeting you because you don't ride. That's not it at all ^.^ I'm glad that you see horses as more than just machines

this is why I don't like riding. Some people think what treat bad with dogs or cats are cruel but use this torturing stuff for horses isn't a torture.

I imaginated it. Happily I never saw such a thing, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of bits that are often used are this cruel, even if they look "pretty"...

I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. Β I've been thinking about sketching some of the training and riding methods I've seen and been part of (when I was too young to understand that it wasn't right), but I was afraid people would just stomp all over it and think I supported this stuff.

I haven't ridden in a few months, but I'm hoping to have more time and see if I can't form a closer bond with my horse. Β I want to see if he and I can be a team when riding...I want to try and use as little tack as possible. Β He pulls a little cart too and I'd love to move away from heavy bridles and see if he doesn't pull as nicely in a bitless bridle. Β

I think it's not, I created it but never saw it. But you know... Almost all bits can have the exact same effect, if not worst... When it's in wrong hands.

I really hope no one uses a thing like that. Nowadays bits are enough already.Β When used properly they are alright, but inproper use is like... everywhere. :/
But you're right with that. Depending on a rider a snaffle can be just as bad as a thing like that.

Idk what you call it, but it's a way of torturing horses ;-; I think I've once seen it on a Marwari I believe. It forces the horse to keep it's mouth open. Idk what purpose they intend. Pretty sure it can break the jaw.
Also, it strenghtens the neck muscles, which probably results in a nicer neck or some shit.

I see a lot of English riders use bridles that hold the horses mouth shut so they cant open their mouth to release some of the pressure on their jaw from the bit. The artist just drew a few of them being used at once.

Those three nosebands are used in English riding and depict different styles of nosebands and bridles. The broad one you can see often in Dressage horses (use the search engine and search for the most famous dressage riders and horses... ), heavily cushioned on the nose and around the chin. The one that crosses over the nose is called mexican bridle and often seen in various classes. The other one is a type of Hanoverian Bridle.
The original purpose of this thing is, that the bit lies more stable in the horses mouth and that the horse can't put the tounge over the bit so easily. Actually we have once been told by our (very oldschool) trainer that between the noseband and the horses head you should be able to put two/three of your fingers, to make sure the horses can still breath well and it doesn't hurt. It is actually not INTENDED to be used to tie the horses mouth together. Though I can hardly remember seeing a lot properly "loose" nosebands in sports during the last years. You usually see them tied too much. It is used often to tie the horses mouth so it can't open it up, which is actually an undesired mistake (at least) in Dressage, because it shows you are not able to use the bit properly and/or your horse wasn't trained well enough to accept it. Using those nosebands to tie your horses mouth together is a sign of poor riding in my opinion.
