Description

Aventicum, now called Avenches is located somewhere in western switzerland, and was the most important city in switzerland on the route from the rhone valley in the south to Germania in the north.

And when you're standing in a field on one of the surrounding hills, near the eastern gate (which was a really big one, leading the eye directly to the important areas of the city)... Well, maybe you can imagine how it was... Standing there, many centuries ago, when the roman empire was still intact.

And if you like what you see, feel free to follow me on facebook . There's always something interesting from around here where i live.

This really is a superb photograph, at once intensely immersive and so beautiful it looks hopelessly beyond reach : the definition of a dream ? What you write about a centuries-old scenery strongly resonates with me and, indeed, the first thing I thought even before seeing the full-sized picture was how much it reminded me of a pre-modern landscape. The frailty of this illusion makes it all the more moving -- yet, as long as the sun sets on such serenely resilient panoramas, there should be reason for hope. Thank you for capturing this moment of eternity.

Wow, thank you very much for this comment. I love to read what someone thinks about such photos.

There was even an aqueduct somewhere, i guess it was visible from this point of view. And then of course the theatre down the hill and the big temple (nowadays, there's just one column left and she's known as Cigognier, the stork column which was the home for a stork couple for a long time). It's so interesting, you'll find everywhere remains of this time...

The name "Cigognier" is strongly evocative, too (storks not being associated with our modern times either, as a rule -- sadly). It really adds to the poetry of the place and the romanticism of the photograph.
