Description I love this picture. I just had a bit of inspiration one day to photograph some strawberries, and this is the best one of all the photos I took. I really like it and hope you do too. Please comment, it all helps me.

I like the element contrasted with the background and the line they form, I used to make many strawberry macros in studio, and itΒ΄s a very good element to capt all textures and colours. Thought if you would use another 45ΒΊ lightning or with one at the level of the ground, you would have capted all textures so much better, and more with light behind as typical for textures siluetes in these kind of shots and food photography! Many people find that boring but experimenting is really interesting

Yeah I think one day I might go back to some fruit macros, now that I've a lot more experience and equipment behind me. There's lots of things I want to try. There's just not enough time (or money) in the day

Thanks for your input

Yes, IΒ΄ll be interested about see when you try that again! Try macros with liquids and ice, itΒ΄s really interesting and abstract!

I am wondering if hte first berry was really darker in color than the rest or if it was the lighting? The focus is lovely, the way the first two are clear and crisp then it slowly blurrs more as you move back. This definatly has a good depth of field, I can feel myself being pulled back into this photo.

Photos of fruits always grab my attention, this is very nicely done.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't. This was shot about 18 months ago on a digital compact. I was lighitng the "set" with two table lamps, one to each side, placed approximately in the middle of the row. It would therefore not surpirse at all if it had turned out darker. It makes sense. Just one of those problems only money can solve

Thank you for your lengthy input though

Well then, if this was done two table lamps, I am truly impressed with the outcome. I know how hard that can be to get the right amount of light and not have things look "yellowed" if you will. Excellent stuff.

Yeah, can't remember exactly what I did, but I'm sure white balance and PS lent large hands

It's a good photo, but the shadows are a little hard...i'm sure that fixable (softbox? close up brolly?). Also, the strawberries are inconsistent in color with eachother...something you could've fixed with more careful selection or PS. Either way, the perspective is nice, I'm thinking this could do with a little more shallow DoF. Highlights are sweet. Keep it up.

bigdavec In reply to aap [2005-05-08 14:25:47 +0000 UTC]

Granted, the shadows may be a little harsh, this was taken back in the day before Ihad an SLR, or any real knowledge of photography for that matter. However, even with that in mind, I wouldn't change the tone of the strawberries: I don't like manipulating digitally more than I have to, and that's just unnecessary IMO. And I'm also happy with the DoF, so I guess all I can say is that my lighting has come a long way

Cheers again mate

Simple really, white card, strong white light, and a little levels work in Photoshop, and voila, or if you have access to an SLR, overexpose by one stop

Great idea! It kind of reminds me of my own deviation Bowl of Strawberries ... (Strawberries are so fun to photograph, aren't they?!)

I like your idea here of lining them up. I also like how the first one is in focus, then as you move farther back they become less and less clear. The main thing that bothers me though is the fact that the first strawberry is really dark and the side we see is in shadow. This combination makes it very hard to see the details in the berry and especially since it's the first one, I would have really liked the details to be a little clearer. You can probably fix this by lightening it (just that specific strawberry - the rest is perfect) in photoshop. In the future, you might want to have your light source on this side of the berries to prevent the shadow from removing details and it would also put a nice shine on them.

That's just my opinion, and I'm no expert. It's still a wondrful photograph and I must commend you on a job well done!

Yeah, this was shot "back in the day", when I was a little less competent. I happen to agree with your comments, but at the moment, I don't feel I want to touch it digitally. I've never liked overprocessing photos and this is a portrayal of my earliest works.

Thanks very much for your extensive and thoughtful comment.

Experimenting with fruit... Clever idea
The strawberries all look very ripe and delicious,
and the brightness and boldness of their red colour is great too...
The amount of light present is perfect, as the strawberries have a nice little shadow
Beautiful capture

The level of detail here is great - all of the small parts of the fruit are nice and crisp - gotta love the gloss that accompanies it as well - makes these look really fresh . . . and tasty. Damn you and your fresh tasty fruit

Can't get these here at the moment - out of season - I'll have to wait another year or give into the genetically modified ones . . . .

Great image - I like the depth and select focus. Nice and simple - clean is the way to go

I'm absolutely loving the depth of field in this shot. Very lovely. The brilliant reds are absolutely yummy! I wish I could take a bite. heh.

One thing.. the full size image is waaay too big. If I was on dial up I would never load that. Perhaps make it smaller by a bit?
