Description I found an old art work of mine. I did this as a present for my grandfather. It is possibly my only Chinese ink art work that's survived the test of time (if you know about the kind of paper used for Chinese ink painting, they are rather fragile). I am not exactly sure what year I did that. I mean, it's written on it in Chinese year, but my knowledge about it is kinda, limited lol~ my guess it was done around 1992 or 1993, definitely before 1995 as that was the year I moved to New Zealand. So that makes the painting at least 10 years old. It's survived the infamous 921 earthquake in Taichung, my cousin's drink split, fell of the wall - broken frame, glass and slightly ripped.

Chinese painting ink (not sure if that's the right name for it) not sure what the kind paper is called in English, it's soft and thin

Edit: confirmed! The paper is called rice paper

Yet another edit: it's been confirmed that the year written in Chinese year (壬申年 ) is year 1992. It was the year of the, duh, you've guessed it, monkey lol

all those wears and tears on it makes it
like an ancient authentic piece of art
(which it will become if time lives on)
but right now it's simply amazing.
the style is so fresh and at peace
I'm wondering - did you do
any more in this style?

Glad that you like it

and to your question, yes, I practice those Chinese ink painting over a period of maybe 5 years. Unfortunately this is the only piece that's survived the test of time those rice papers are very tricky to keep - especially to a 12 year old

I love that fur, and especially the color around the eyes. really nice painting, and the story behind it is pretty amazing too.
I love it when artists and former artists discover their old work. seeing their progress through the years and everything, that's so cool.

How's the trip?

Yes! Rice paper!
Why is it that paintings done on that kind of paper looks more "valious and delicate"?
Hey, You did an excelent job for your grandad! Let's exchange works sometime eh?

love your works!

Bro, you need to teach me how to do that! The best I can do is bamboo and little shrimps.. (don't even ask. that's the only thing my dad taught me to draw. Then again he's never been an artist. )

and sadly i can't read those characters.

Bird26 In reply to CherrySama [2006-03-17 13:38:27 +0000 UTC]

thanks

and those characters at left hand side are the years and season when that painting was done. Not sure how to translate the year, but it says Autumn. Then the last three characters represent my Chinese name

Vonnie-Plum [2006-03-15 19:55:14 +0000 UTC]

I like how it is ripped and worn. It gives it more character. Plus it doesn't hurt that the actual picture is amazing as well.

well that ark work surely is a true survivor, then ^^
wonderful painting~ I really like the fur. you've made it look very inviting.

I think the monkey looks a bit angry, though.. maybe it wants us to leave it alone. but still..
it's a monkey with attitude ^^ it won't let us humans decide how everything's gonna be in this world. it's (almost) a world of democracy, so the monkeys whould have their vote to! XD
