Description ... is coming upon you. Fly, you fools. .-.

~~~
(okay, Gandalf, get out, this is serious)
Yes, this picture has a background story, but I first realized that myself after I had finished the drawing (which took me some time, damn all those little houses ).
So the background is quite up-to-date when you look what's going on in the world:
Nature scientists have found out (actually we know for some years already) that the lights of big cities confuse migrating birds on their flight routes. The birds either land or fly in a wrong direction, which causes them to loose energy and this often results in death. By the way, the same shit happens to sea turtles and alot of other animals.
We have to ask ourselves: Is it really necessary to keep our cities high-lighted all the time?
I guess that is what I had in my subconscious when I started drawing this. mh...
That's one side of the story.
The other would be that several details I drew here represent ... something:
- The houses and high rising buildings obviously represent the fact that we are becoming more and more humans, the growing of cities, and the replacing of natural environments
- the black water -> oil catastrophes (keyword: Gulf of Mexico)
- the fabrics, dark smoking: industrial polution
- power poles: many birds die on the lines every year
- for some reason I drew a tank in the middle of the city o.O
- cars: well, guess!!!
...
The birds (wild goose they are btw) represent not just migrating birds, but furthermore stand for all animals that have to retreat from humanitie's onmarching.
...
Anyway, let me know what you think, please.
Material: Aquarell pencils, auqarell lead pencils, water, aquarells
(yes I used a photo of New York City as inspiration for the houses. ... yes there's The Statue too XD)
Wow, what a powerful message and impressing execution! And you're so right; there are so many useless things we do resp. things we could do better that hurt other species instead (I'm thinking on the invasive species, the deforestation, ocean pollution, and the whole energy and climate change problems...)... However, your picture symbolises a rather underrated and unknown aspect, I think, and not only this makes it very worthful! Thank you very much for broadening my horizon and for raising attention on that important topic! It's a very touching piece.
Thank you. I was hoping to send out a message with this, and you saying that it "broadened your horizon" really means alot to me.
I am actually thinking of redoing this picture some day, and in a bigger version. I once had a small exhibition I got through a friend and in the newspaper article about it, they explicitedly mentioned this drawing of mine. So... I think I should redo it some day, or do more in that direction.
So thank you again for your comment.
You're very welcome!
I'm glad that my words made you that happy.
And the thing with the redoing and "more in this direction" sounds really great!
I'm almost curious on what you'll do! : )
Have much luck and success for your coming work and exhibitions! I'm sure they'll be worth it.
That's very interesting, Vee.
I like how the brown, grey metals, the sea of oil and the grey sky look so dull in comparison to the bright blue sky and sea on the left with the birds, that makes you even more think, about how we are chasing away nature's beauty.
I wonder if enough people would care for the environment for things to change drastically in the future. My family talks always about the rhino poaches and how terrible they are all the time, but nobody does anything. And it frustrates me to be just "listening" and not being able to help matters.
In Zimbabwe, a country on the borders of South Africa, there was news of a guy who poured 3 tons of cyanide into the water hole in a safari lodge. Now ALL the animals are sick, the vultures, the giraffe, and are dying fast, because that chemical is very poisonous. It's a chemical used in mining, I believe.
So why did he do that?
To get tusks from the elephants for money. -___-
But where the heck did he get 3 tons? Nobody actually knows... that's why I find I can't actually have anything to believe in anymore... all I can see humans do, is stuff is so depressing, they always are running away from it, or pretending it doesn't exist.
But we deep thinkers do elsewise.
This is beautiful in a sorta tragic way, and I like the story behind it because it IS true and it does,unfortunately, happen
