Isn't the male a little to dark? I mean, you can't see the head. And sure, even if this *___* is what the females really see anyway and are attracted to, I'd still say you'd be able to see some hints at the head of the actual bird.

I SO KNEW you were going to point this out. But I checked every photo I could find - you really can see NADA. I was like "this looks so weird" - but the thing is that the male turns his head skyward, so his throat points towards the female and then somehow his head completley vanishes. Also the feathers form a shield that is tilted inwards, casting a shadow over him. I WANTED to hint with lights at the head, but I look at this photo and I'm like:
Can you see a head? I can't O.o
Here it opens the beak, but you still can't seee anyhting besides the things over his eyes: sciencefieldnotebooks.wikispac…

And I KNEW you'd say that XD
well, sorta. After all, black birds can be hard to find good photos of with contrasts that allow you to see details. I know, that's why I don't have more pictures of my cat, because she just looks like a black blob, unless she's is in the sunshine.

Nono, I don't think it's the photo's problem I'f seen these birds in films. I think it's an optical illusion, because the tail shadows the head and the head is also not held straight, but pointed towards the sky.
