Have you chosen a myth form for America? I have a few suggestions.

Nice! You could also turn him into a Jersey devil or Piasa dragon.
I plan on drawing him as a piasa anyway, so its ok if you decide to keep him as a Mochi. I wanted to take the more native american mythology route. He's actually really cute as a Mochi!

Well the jersey devil isn't native american.

Okay, those mustaches (for good reason) are getting lots of positive attention.
On the note of the Brewing Trouble Cast, I challenged myself to try and identify all of them. Out of the 22 I think (counting both halves of Russia as one), I could only identify 16:
Canada, Spain, Romano, Greece, France, The Italy Brothers, Russia, America, England, Japan, Germany, Prussia, and what I'm fairly sure are Australia, Portugal and Estonia. A little hunch tells me that the horned creature in front of the small-unicorn-like creature is China as a Qilin, but I really have no idea. The others, I could continue to venture guesses, but I'll spare myself the embarrassment.
Regardless, I really can appreciate the time and work that went into the composition. And all these sketches in general.

Well, here I am throwing ideas out there again, but I did a little (and I mean a little) digging in a particular Wikipedia article. Now, while Wikipedia is by no means a scholarly resource, it does offer fair breadth and a variety of leads for deeper research. One that jumped out at me in particular - that I hadn't heard of at least - was the Xiezhi; no, I don't know how I should pronounce that, but the idea behind it was interesting, and I sometimes got the vibe that China wanted to play peacekeeping older brother with his siblings, so it had an endearing quality for me; I don't know if you'd want to use it and how you'd modify it if you did, but here's a link so you can read more about it for yourself.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiezhi
And maybe you've checked this one out already, but I'll provide the link just in case:

While the idea is interesting, I'm not completely sure about the Xiezhi. It's more about truth and justice than protection
The idea of a protective creature isn't bad however. From what I've been reading China puts a lot of emphasis on righteousness, longevity, balance (yin-yang), etc so something like a Foo Dog (this one could lead to particularly amusing results if we used his lion-dog breeds as reference) or a Bixi would fit. Maybe the Jin Chan and Pixiu as well
But then we also have other interesting creatures like the Fenghuang (the female opposite of the dragon, who China identifies as his ancestor), the Nian (the creature behind China's famous lion dance), the Dragon Turtle (a physical embodiment of several things China loves), the Sanwuzu (and extremely old myth that definitely fits well with China's age) or the Xing Tian (just completely freaky)

I agree, truth is key to the representation, I think my problem was that I was overemphasizing the role of intervention in my comment.
The Foo Dog is interesting (though I would have to work my brain around a certain old-ish Disney Channel Cartoon to take it more seriously. I looked into Wikipedia's exploration of the breed topic, and I got this:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo_Dog_…
Apparently it's more of a category than a single breed. Pug sort of took me by surprise. *shakes head sadly at the thought of a certain family pet* But yes, it could be intriguing to use any of those breeds as a base, though there's room for fitting in the more mythological traits, of course. The Bixi, Jin Chan and Pixiu are interesting, though I think I saw a pattern of emphasis on wealth (and granted also a pattern of warding off evil) - it would be interesting to see the effect of that on group dynamics, seeing as a Matagot is also considered a "money cat" in some circles. The Fenghuang, which if I recall correctly was your idea expressed here in the drawing, is definitely an interesting proposal, offering the counterpart to the dragon you were trying to avoid; the Nian is interesting, though (and yes this is only from one source, but) the fear of the color red might be an issue and the lion dance would be more indicative of protection than the Nian itself. The Dragon Turtle is different from the Bixi, I presume, since the Bixi was shown to have a stronger application toward funerary decoration such as steles, and the Dragon Turtle finds itself used in Feng Shui. The Sanwuzu is definitely interesting, a 3-legged crow if I'm thinking of the same one, and also alternatively known as a sun-raven for its role in traveling with the sun each day. The Xing Tian however, yeah, just freaky.

I've been doodling the creatures since my last reply. I'll post it in a sec
I actually knew about it. Personally I think the longer hair breeds are a closer fit (though a mini-Foo Dog China would be hilarious)
Yeah, those were a bit of a stretch. I'm pending more towards the Bixi because I can easily imagine China getting an urge to look for a pillar (or something equally heavy) to support on his back and trying to dig one of the foundations of the manor to take it's place
Outside of being a bane to snakes, the Fenghuang shares a common problem with the dragon, quilin, etc. It's too overly good and powerful =/
Yeah, the Nian would likely be an antagonist creature and turn China into a danger for others. It would go a bit against his character, but given the context it would make sense
Outside of Feng Shui the Dragon Turtle doesn't seem to have much to work with > >
My main question with the Sanwuzu is if he'd shine everything like the sun, or that would only happen while with the chariot. Either way he'd generate a lot of heat and scorch everything, which might be counter productive
Yeah it's freaky but at he same time very funny. I can easily imagine him scaring the hell out of everyone, even Shadow Russia, as he goes on a major rage fit against everyone

Ah, cool, that would be interesting.
And that sounds like a good plan; just out of curiosity: how much have you already cemented for character roles?
