Description I was feeling a bit down today so I drew this to cheer myself up

There won't be any ocean scenes in the story, so I figured I might as well let these 2 dorks have some fun at the beach *Spain is wearing tomato arm floats btw*Β

SanselEyesofgod In reply to Birvan [2014-08-01 16:57:27 +0000 UTC]

We are ignored because our history was swallowed by the history of the great countries, countries that are even younger then us. Germany, USA, England, France, Italy, Russia and so on...The history of Portugal was prooved by even foreign historians, to be the richest of all, and also our culture, tarditions and even our genes count a thousand of outside cultures, richer then any american or any other european country. If people study our traditions, culture and history, we have culture from all the mediterranean, africa, even norse countries. Every civilization of the ancient passed here and many stayed here in small comunities, greeks, egyptians, persians, fenicians, then later romans, then all type of barbarians passed here, goths, visigoths, wandaluz, germans, everything we can imagine, then the arabs and the berbers, indians would come here trought the line of the claiphate empire, vikings came here, norman, saxon, then the carolingian, spaniards. We are the european country with more african blood (not only the north african blood, also the blood from the slaves), black people in the XVII century in Portugal were so many that we had to stop with the slavery, and the black mixed with portuguese. No other european country will ever, ever have this mix of cultures, ...Oh i forgot the celts, and, if people belive in legends, portuguese are suposelly descendents of Atlantis. All i am saying is, we forget our own history because the great world powers stuff our face with their suposelly great history. And portuguese in portugal accept and shut up. Don't get me wrong i am not a complete patriotist dick that hates all the cultures besides from mine, i love asiatic culture, african culture, american culture, but we portuguese have been in so many places, there is no place in the world that doesn't have our touch, even the american north had it, but it was almost lost, only a few hsitorians speak about it. Like Kidda says in Atlantis "Our culture is like a rock in wich the seas hits and day by day is more and more lost". I belive in keepers of the culture such as i try to be, you also try, and some people still try to do. I belive in a Portugal were we can still accept foreign cultures but can also share its own with the same opening we accept others. I belive portuguese have the power to show their culture and to belive in it, unfortunately, even in university, people are looking at portuguese culture as something...simple, with no power or maguenificence. I had a history teacher that said - " Compare our culture to the german, they have opera, we have fado..." - But german have less then a century we have almost 10 centuries (as a country of course). I guess that if portuguese start loving their culture as something amazingly strong and beautiifull, others outside will stop ignoring us. I thank you for loving our culture. And sorry for the long deep response ^^'....

*sorry I took so long to reply, but a large comment needs proper time to be read*
I really don't know how to comment on this without starting a vicious circle discussion on our culture and history and how the fault is greatly our own doing

Yeah we have a really, really old history not many countries can boast about and we feel pride on having such a varied heritage running in our veins (despite some of the northern countries considering us as inferior whites). But at the same time our negligence and old, bad habits are keeping us from being more well known (both by us and by others)
I really don't know what solutions to offer except by digging up and sharing stories about Port and how he's much more kickass than he seems to be

Is fine, i don't midn late comments if they are as good as this one you sent. You are right, indeed, we keep ourselfs behind because of our very very old mentality. We still lhave the same mentality of one century ago we live with the same ideas, the ideas are not renovated they are still and ancient. I belive that also happens because of the fact that our country is mainly made of old people with old ideas. But i am sick that all the new ideas don't come from our head but from other countries, we don't enovate we re-create and that's a shame. I think that sharing our stories, legends and tales is one of the greatest ways to share our culture, i feel that in this we share the same thoughts, i feel bad because i should do more drawings and writings about our culture. Like...i love the arab culture in Portugal, is oen of my favourites, i love the tales of the enchnated moors, and the underground moors also the arab princes and the wars against the infidel. Maybe after the project i am in i will do such thing.Β

Thanks for the comment hun! ^^

Birvan In reply to SanselEyesofgod [2014-08-22 15:20:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, our biggest frustration is how the mentality is so stagnant, innovation has barely room to breath
But the fault isn't just of the old population. Besides the fact the power structure that neglects the people and forces them to rely on their personal networks as a means of survival has been going on for well over a century, the scars of the dictatorship can still be deeply felt. People are still afraid to act and deviate from the old customs because of the potential repercussions. And we were also kept far away from influencing the power, another thing that keeps the current, rotten status quo DX

Oh yeah, the islamic influences in Portugal are a really interesting subject. The more I look around the more I notice Port kept them much more alive than Spain did XD
Did you know the word Mouro originally had 2 very different meanings? One was the one we all know, the people that occupied most of the peninsula, but the other actually refers to a supernatural creature (a mix between fairies, the soul and the dead). That mix of meanings is what caused our Mouras Encantadas to assume arabic featuresΒ

SanselEyesofgod In reply to Birvan [2014-08-26 16:03:24 +0000 UTC]

Well, the one i know the most and that circles around my great grandfather's own story is the moors of the underground. In a little place called Foz, where my great grand father lived, it was told that at night people saw lights in the dark. Foz is not a village, was a corporate you see, typical of the times of the dictatorship, so only like 15 people or so lived there and few are the people that are still alive today, like my grandfather still lived there and he is 76 (just to explain). So in the night people saw lanterns in line, like people carring them one after the other's. In the morning food and clothing would desappear from the farms and houses. So it was told that in the underground lived the moors, people with magical properties, arabs that runned away form the tirany of the conquerers and the only way to hide was making houses underground. People of Foz said that my great grand father was from the undeground and they called him the moor to his death, he was very smart and could do many things, but this is only a legend people created around my great grandfather and his family because they appeared from nowhere and started working on that place.Β

That was the legend of the moors of the underground, now the fact. - It was found indeed in many places of Alentejo caves with houses built there and also some houses underground, but found no registration of humans, no skelletons nothing, just houses with chairs, tables, floor beds...It's uncertain if it belonged to the suposed moors, since people don't belive in it much they stopped the searchs about this topic. - Also in the zone of Lisbon can be found some of these underground houses.

Now another legend of that same place, Foz, that my great grand father told me, you must know that clinged to the myths of the moors it is atached alot the myth of a certain type of snake, normally snakes that protect treasures under old trees, they have a specific name but i can't recall now. So there was a old oak in this place, almost 2 hundreds years old, and it was told that under the oak there was a treasure guardaded by a snake. So in order to go get the treasure you had to dream of it three nights, and in those three nights you couldnt fix the bed. if this happened, by the fourth night you should get a torche make a hole digging to the treasure, it would lead to a cave and there you should face the snake and burn her head.Β

The fact. - It is true that in Alentejo there are alot of moors treasures, in fact it is forbidden to use metal detectors in here cause of that, it is said that in my great grandfather's second house in Foros do ArrΓ£o he has a treasure hidden, but no one knows where.

Oh well, this two stories are conected, since both speak of the moors. I will see if i can get the books i got about the iberic and portuguese mythology to give you more information and when i get home i will see if i can find my old diary where i have the stories.Β

I hope it helped ^^Β

Wow, really interesting story
That definitely sounds like a story from the north. And it also shows the general view on the moors being sorcerers or mystical people. You can definitely boast about having magic blood running through your veins (I think I can claim having marine men blood, because my skin is "scaly") XD

I wouldn't be surprised if part of those underground houses were roman or visigoth and it helped spread the myth

Another great story
Yeah and I've also heard about stories on the snakes being moorish princesses, so not all were viewed as antagonists
It's believed the snake myth is the reminiscent myth from the original celtiberians, since many are connected to water and sea myths (the merfolk can be considered close relatives of the snakes)

That reminds me of a legend from Alentejo my mother once told me. When we were driving to a particular beach we always passed near a property that had an oak tree permanently in bloom. I don't remember the details but according to the legend the father and owner of the property had a huge amount of money but for some reason he didn't want to pass it to his 2 sons (probably because he feared they would waste it rather than carry on with his work?), so he buried everything under a tree before he died. The sons desperately tried to find the treasure for years but they never managed to find the right tree and gave up. Years later when the tree was old enough to bloom its petals were always golden in color and lasted the entire year

That would be great
And yes, it always helps a lot. It's great inspiration material ^^

I think that the fact that we had so many cultures passing here with such strong mythology helps the myths. And maybe you have some Atlantians blood XP. The underground houses could probably be form those, but people still don't look for it. I had heard of the snake being moors princesses too. And the story your mother told almost could be the beginning of the story i told you XD. I loved it. By the way, sorry to ask but where are you from?

It definitely does. Though it makes me a bit sad the most well known ones tend to be just the medieval stories and actual lore

I've read a few stories of people trying to link Atlantida to Portugal, but honestly they sound rather stupid and forcedΒ > >

Yeah XD

My family is from the south but I've lived most of my life in Vila Real de TrΓ‘-os-Montes, so I guess in terms of lore I feel more galician than mouro

I like some Atlantis legends. And yes it also pisses me of the constant love for the medieval stories. Well now i understand your conection with the people of the norse. I have a big conection with the moors, in fact i actually dress in a arab stylish but now i can't due to the constant attacks of therrotists, last thing i want is people to think that i am conected with Al-Qaeda. I think you and me, we are two faces of the Portugal mythology and also proove of the portuguese variety. Just funny we are both portuguese speaking in english. XDΒ

Birvan In reply to SanselEyesofgod [2014-09-06 12:38:31 +0000 UTC]

We have some pretty awesome medieval stories. But we could definitely use some of the other onesΒ

I think the danger of that here in Portugal is pretty low. Most of the terrorist attacks are done by all skin colors anyway > >

Hehe, yeah XD
But considering this is an english website we're just making the conversation available to the masses
