Description

The result of one of my random conversations with my friendΒ Asquith
Besides being a hand drawing practice I did try all those hand postures. Some were really awkward

*and yes, I write like a left-handed, despite being right-handed*

my grasp is the one directly below the "normal" hand position.

That's a pretty common one

I think the grip that's most like mine is the one on the top right corner.

Cool

For me that grip would only work for large brush strokes on a canvas or paper, not for fine drawing on a tablet

Oh, definitely.
thats how I hold a pencil when doing traditional art, but when using a tablet, I do it most like the one above the mouse. ((Should probably get a stylus...))

A stylus makes a world of difference

Does it really?

Birvan In reply to Loolaa33 [2014-07-22 13:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, very. It's like you previously drawing with your feet and then start drawing with your hand!

Though truth to be told it takes a bit of time to adjust. It took me a month to get my brain to use the coordinate system and not having to look at what hand was doing in order to control the end result (I suggest using Minesweeper for precision and speed training )

I'll keep that in mind.
thanks for the info! : D

My pleasure ^^

Interesting, there are one or two here that I don't recognize, but still, it's something else to see the effect of different grips and by the look of it, different writing methods, such as the touch pad and mouse. Did you find any to be simply uncomfortable or otherwise difficult to sustain?

Birvan In reply to Mr-Asquith [2014-07-21 17:43:24 +0000 UTC]

It was a good way to test your hand's stability and which poses are uncomfortable to you or not

Only the first 2 on the left were comfortable for me. The others either produced unstable results or forced me to use a much stronger grip to keep the stylus in place (the upper right one might work for broad brush strokes though)

This is true.

...and that makes sense. (and that too. XD)

And it was a good excuse to practice hand drawing

True; now if only I was so dedicated to practice.

Can't help you there

I hold my pencil differently than these. ^_^'

Birvan In reply to EmeraldAngel2 [2014-07-21 12:00:33 +0000 UTC]

I can't say I tried them all. My hand just got tired

How do you hold it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldAngel2 In reply to Birvan [2014-07-21 13:06:42 +0000 UTC]

It's hard to explain. I hold it with my middle, ring, and pinky fingers closed like a fist and have the pencil curled in my thumb and index.

So the pen tip points inwards to the wrist? Or just downwards?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldAngel2 In reply to Birvan [2014-07-21 14:04:10 +0000 UTC]

It's at an angle away from the wrist.

Birvan In reply to EmeraldAngel2 [2014-07-21 16:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like an awkward way to write. Doesn't the hand cover the text?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldAngel2 In reply to Birvan [2014-07-21 17:47:32 +0000 UTC]

Nope. Well, maybe if you're left handed? I'm right handed, and I've been writing this way since I could write. I do try to hold it the way it is shown on the second row on the right, but I just can't. The clearest way that I can show you is from this picture. www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=h…

Birvan In reply to EmeraldAngel2 [2014-07-21 17:53:58 +0000 UTC]

Aah, now I see *and no, I'm right handed as well, despite my grip style*

I find that grip very strong, but not very good to allow more fine work

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldAngel2 In reply to Birvan [2014-07-21 17:56:22 +0000 UTC]

What do you mean by ' more fine work ' ? That it doesn't have good pensmenship or use for drawing?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to EmeraldAngel2 [2014-07-21 18:56:21 +0000 UTC]

It means that type of grip doesn't allow me to do the small movements and subtle pressures I need in order to draw

But as long as it works for that's what matters

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

EmeraldAngel2 In reply to Birvan [2014-07-21 18:57:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that is true. ^_^'
