Description

This was inspired by an idea I had just before I fell asleep. I won't even pretend I have any idea of what I'm doing

I guess with this mouth structure kissing would be a weird concept for merfolk. Also because the way the jaws are designed, they would find the humans' ability to move the jaws sideways or take a punch to the face with minimal damage amazing

This is cool! Was this inspired by a shark's mouth?

No, it was on a random bony fish

Oh okay!

Love it, Favorited! Quick question though, why do you think they would have problems with face punches?

It's a difference in design. The human jaw is a simple mechanism, compared to the complex hinge structure fish have developed to increase their mouth size and cause a suction system to capture prey (pretty important to capture slippery fish prior tool development). In other words they traded a thick, heavy faceΒ [link ] for hinge room to allow a much larger mouth

*hope that made sense*

excuse me a moment *turns to participate in unhealthy fangirling and squeeing to friends* Okay, aside from the face up top being adorable, and the face on the bottom being adorable in a different way, and my appreciation of your artist's comments, I also laugh to myself that you can come up with these epic sketches on a whim and then say you have no idea what you're doing.

I don't often look an open-mouthed fish in the face, but I think you've translated the anatomy and physiology pretty well, and your consistency in proportions from one illustration to the next is admirable.
TTwTT

I have to ask one more silly question though: that curly bracket dividing the two sections... did you draw that?

Lol, your comments are always entertaining to read XD

I definitely have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to understand fish skull anatomy, how it all operates and what muscles go where in order for it to work. I faked it by looking at references, but I still can't grasp the concept properly

Yes, why?

I'm glad to entertain.

I have been down this road, and for me it hasn't always been pretty, but yes, 100%, visual research and knowing the science behind composition and movement lends life to art.

... because I wondered if it was too perfect... sorry, I'm a sucker for cute and simply elegantΒ (or is it 'elegantly simple'...?)Β things like that.

XD

Not to mention you might learn new mechanics and ideas that will spark even weirder and interesting designsΒ

Ah, I simply have a ton of practice with them. They're a common resource when taking notes in school

This is also true; nothing like reality to inspire fantasy, right?

And you must have a much steadier hand than I do... I try, but smooth brush strokes don't come easily to me.

Yep XD

Maybe. But it might also have to do with me writing like a left handed (aka my hand being above the pen, rather than on the side). Hard to tell

Ah, I never thought of that, still, very cool (Now I'm curious about looking into the history of why people hold writing utensils the way they do).

That should wield interesting results

I laughed a bit at this ; according to this wiki-author, there is a correct way to hold a writing utensil.

This next article still affirms that there's one correct way to hold a utensil, but covers a progression that children are expected follow in developing it.

This one lost me about half-way through since it still doesn't answer the main question, but it goes into more detail than the previous ones have.

Okay, so this was kind of a peanut gallery option, but if you're just curious about everyday people's commentary regarding diversity of grips, you might get a giggle or two out of it.

I tried to find something that just focused on "different" as opposed to "appropriate" or "correct", alas, I suspect it's a relatively unpopular concept.

But then, what did I expect to get out of a 10-minute search on Google? My apologies...

I think you did a really great search. Yeah, most people just focus on correct incorrect grasp postures (and some are indeed bad for your hand's health), rather than exploring the different varieties that are out there. It's not surprising
