Because listening to The Beatles and Rolling Stones makes you a lot more intelligent than those that listen to mainstream.
That's just conforming to the opposite of mainstream and it doesn't make you any smarter or better than those who genuinely like mainstream music. Because all mainstream music is about partying and having sex, right? Well then I guess "Rolling In The Deep" and "Pumped Up Kicks" aren't mainstream then.

Ever see those comments made by twelve year olds on a Coltrane video, "I'm so speshul because I like jazz, unliek the soopid kids in yy rade school!"? This stamp is pretty much those comments in a different medium.
I hate mainstream music and am considered reasonably smart. But my sister and brother are much more intelligent than me and their music taste is absolute shit.

ACTUALLY, a persons taste in music is different in everybody. What music you like is an opinion. So just because you dont like something, doesnt mean that others dont.

I admit that I often deride popular music as "too mainstream" and thus not worth my time, but I also realize that I'm just being a twat when I say things like that. The music I happen to like was mainstream at some point, it's just the nostalgia filter and internet-born snarkiness seeping through my better judgement.
Honestly, I kind of want to kick people in the cunt for deriding the mainstream so much. As social animals, humans are supposed to think along with the group rather than outside of it. Treading outside of the "mainstream", while it can be seen as beautiful or inspiring, can also be seen as a defection depending on how you look at it.
Although, like I said, I tend to also deride some of the things I define as "mainstream". Sometimes it's because I genuinely see it as an identity and intelligence-sucking corporate device, sometimes it's because I simply confuse "mainstream" with "new", and other times it's because I'm too insecure to admit that I like something that's being ridiculed by others in my peer group.
In either case, I have to own up to the fact that I genuinely like KoRn and a couple of Linkin Park songs. Whether that makes me a stupid poser or a normally-functioning member of a proper society is up to you to decide. It's not like I have a choice in how I'm seen by others anyway.
