2 of 3. The 2nd in the 3 pannel series, for my portfolio to submit to Top Cow.

The 1st part Wukong & the Princess onfront each other, and in this 2nd pannel, they Fight.

***************

Notes:

No inks.

I wanted to Convey fire without actually showing the fire.

I used a Flame shaped design for the edging to convey that this is the story where Sun Wukong Spars with the fan Princess of the Firey Mountains.

I showed allot of smokes, and sparkiling cinders.

The strong lighting coneys flames, combined with the cinders and smoke.

The expression of Wukong and the expression of exagerated movements also helps to convey the firery atmosphere and over all moood.

There's often ways you can convey things without actually showing them. Movies often ustilize these tequniques, as well as artists like, my personal favorite, Degas.

Also, even tho' in this story Sun Wukong is in his monk clothing, I put him in his Kingly Armor. Even in this story he does wear armour, but it's the Bull King's that he uses magic to apear on his body.

Wow. Absolutely awsome. I love the vibrant color and how di dyou get the gold flakes? It's so exciting and energetic and your figures move so fluently and gracefully. :} I admire this peice quite a bit. Thjis is just so great and I love how you worked in all these symbolic elements to give the look and feel you were going for.

Ooohh, this is like chocolate for my artistic brain. ^.^ Must study it more...

hey kandice hun! - this is really something else... the sketch was interesting enough but I never imagined it would come out like this when finished! - the cinders in the air make the peice full and lively, as well as adding a sense of confusion to the battle, the fan princess' dress is beautifully shiny, looks like satin or something and her pose is so wonderfully exagerated - really great work hun, well done

Love how you drew the staff to make it, and the whole picture, actually feel like it's in motion.

It's one of those tricks I learned in animation class... it's called "squash & stretch". Plus, Degas used allot of "blur lines" also, and I used that same trick when I used to draw live animals, because they never quit moving arround.

Man, this is awesome. Those sparkling cinders and expressive poses really convey a lot of emotion! Beautiful action lines with Sun's pole(?) as well. I also really like the shimmer on the fan Princess' dress! Just like silk.

Yeah, I don't know how you'd want to translate his weapon. In the English version of the epic they translated it to "cudgel". BUt, in Chinese it's called "Ru Yi Jing Gu Ban"

"Ru Yi" means "as you wish" or "as you will" which means you can make it do what you will/wish, even change shape.

And, "Jing Gu Ban" is kind of what it is, ... it kinda of means like a magical weapon... like "gold banded weapon".

He got his Jing gu ban frmo the Eastern Sea Dragon King. It was originally a huge monolith-like Pole that was thick as a tower and held the Milky way in place. The Dragon king thought he would never be able to lift it and offered it to him.

So, Wukong took it and read it's inscription, and realized he could actually lift it, and since it's a "Ru Yi" it will change to whatever he wishes it to.

He shrunk it to a thnner size and played arroudn with it. Then, he changed it to the size of a needle and stuck it inside his ear. Whevever he needs it, he just pulls it from his ear, and it grows bigger. Sometimes it's a knife, or wall, or whatever he wants.

The dragon king got ticked off that Wukong actually took it, then made a complaint to the Heaven Empoerer. And, that when trouble began.

I thought his bo staff originally held the level of the ocean in place, and that once Wu Kong took it, that's why we have the tides, and all...

Yeah, I'm confused about that too.... IN the book (the English Version) they say it hold the Milky way in place, but I've heard other versions (in Chinese) that say once he took that "treasure" then the waters became full of waves whcih had never been there before...

I'm leaning towards the idea that it was to keep the ocean still, rather than holding the Milky Way in place.
