Description This followed a discussion with a new friend/fellow author of mine about digital vs. traditional art. She's amazed by what I'm able to do with a pencil and paper, and I'm in awe of her Way of the Wacom.

In any case, I had an urge to try to do something digital, but the only program I have is Paint. Yeah. I know. I wanted something to draw, but I knew I'd get annoyed having to switch screens between Paint and my reference pic, so I cast about for something I'd already drawn. Kakashi was on top of the pile.

I know it's not perfect, but for maybe two hours' work, it's not bad, and it was educational.

I still want a Wacom, though.

NOT BAD?!?!?! Honey, this is amazing for Paint! I mean, hell, I can't even do cel shading and I HAVE the tablet!

Speaking of... definitely go with the Wacom if you can. I've got the 9x12 one and it's awesome. The stylus comes with three different tips, depending on how thin you want your lines, it has a wireless mouse that you can use on the tablet (no more mouse pad, WOOHOO!!!), the stylus also has a little clicker button to hold selections open. It's pressure sensitive with programs like PhotoShop, Gimp (my personal favorite) and ArtRage, so you can do veeeery light pen strokes to get a light shading effect.

The only thing that'll take some getting used to with the larger tablet (and maybe the smaller one, I'm not sure) is adjusting to the fact that the tablet represents the whole screen. Unlike a mouse where you can pick it up, put it down on the pad again and have the cursor stay where it was, the stylus moves according to your movements. If you lift it off the middle of the page and touch it in the corner, it does just that. It feels a little awkward at first, but you get used to it.

And like I said in the email, if you don't have PhotoShop already I highly recommend the Gimp. It's free and, in my opinion, is just as good.

*salutes* Yes, ma'am! I already downloaded Gimp, I just haven't gotten around to playing with it much. Yet. I thought the smudging thing was pretty cool . . .

The thing with Paint is to pretty much ignore most of the tools. The one I use the most is the curved line maker. I only use the pencil to close up gaps when I'm painting it. It's mostly just a matter of finding the right colors to make the shading. I usually just turn down the sat. I might try to do something else, something tougher. Doing Kakashi is cheating, since he doesn't really have a face, per se. *shakes fist at Kishimoto for being such a tease*

The smudging thing is VERY cool, as is the filter option called Gaussian blur. And if you need help figuring anything ou (like the layers and some other filter tricks) lemme know.

Aaaaaah... I see. I've got a very basic Pain program, one that doesn't have anything like saturation toning and such. That's probably why I can't pull off anything with it.

Oh, and doing Kakashi? It's only cheating if the other person finds out about it. Otherwise, it's fair game. *grins and winks*
