Diamondback Water Snake (Nerodia rhombifer rhombifer)Okay here is the second ugliest snake species in the entire world. First, of course, is the Yellow Belly Water Snake, which as soon as I can catch one of the ugly little buggers, I'll take a picture.
Anyway these guys have a really nasty little attitude, but make awsome pets if they are raised right. To be honest, I can't think of a more enjoyable snake species to watch.
This guy was hanging out on a tree limb and surprisingly enough, posed for a couple of photos, without becoming too nasty

Awesome picture. I actually like water snakes a lot. I kept a rhombifera once though, and he was the only water snake I ever kept that never tamed down. Mean lil sucker!

Lol, I've heard stories of the nasty disposition of this species of Nerodia. In Florida our most abundant is the N. fasciata pictiventris, and they are far from nasty. In fact, they're so passive that it borders on stupid. I think they rely so heavily on mimicing cottonmouths that they forget that they have the ability to bite, lol. Anywayyy great capture. I love the pose in the tree -- just awesome.

snake photos are awesome. you have some degree of danger trying to get closeups of them. So i give you probs, even if you were using a zoom. Your still close enough for it piss off and chase you.. so many props to you

-lol- I have pictures of me handling the same snake, but they didn't turn out as good as the shot of when I first found him (this photo). I pulled him down from the tree and took photos of him beside a darker diamondback water snake. I'm not sure if I'll post the picture, I might scrap it though.
There is no real danger as long as you understand snakes and know what species you are working with.

Oh, if you think water snakes are ugly, google around for wart snakes. Imagine a water snake without much pattern (except the javan file snake), scales like the points on a file, and a skin 5 sizes too large for it's body.
Predictably, I want one, badly.

I guess the main reason I don't wanna just cuddle water snakes is their attitude. They are the only snake that has ever tagged me and they get me on a regular basis. I know it's because I let them, but ouch..they love to chew after they bite. Let's not even mention their ugly little eyes -lol-, I wouldn't do that to them.

Yeah, a fair few have gotten me too, though the musk has always been more of a pain; that crap just doesn't wash out easily.

-lol- The musk is awful, there is no snake musk that is worse than a water snakes musk. They have different scents too. The Diamondback is a lot different from say the Yellow Belly Water Snake. The worse one is probably Yellow Belly, the least awful is probably the Northern Water Snake.
Of course Northern Water Snakes happen to be my favorite water snake, so that has nothing to do with it -lol-.

I think he looks cool. He looks really beautiful all wrapped around the tree. This is the prettiest photo you have done so far. Not only for the snake, but for catching him in such a natural way.

I liked this photo too, other than I'm not a huge fan of these guys, mostly because they like to chew on me. It makes me wonder, maybe I taste good *wiggles eyebrows*.

-lol- You can have them, just bring lots of skunk off. They let off a horrible musk which is almost as bad as a skunk. Little bit easier to get off, but foul none the less.
