Story
Total Word Count: 1053

It was not the sound of the roaring rain it was the sound of the crowd that was the only thing that hit the small bay colt's ear drums and those of his owner and jockey Sarah Jones. They had all ready been out that morning to repeat their workout, five o'clock in the morning to be exact. Now all that was left was to run for it.....no...no....preparation that was what was left now and ow yeah, breathing....on Sarah Jones part at least .

Sarah Jones' stomach at that moment was in turmoil as she tried distracting herself by brushing the small bay colt for what seemed to be the five hundredth time. There was something about being at Churchill Downs, and a starter....no make that the first starter, in one of the most famous and prestigious races in the entire racing world, that made Sarah Jones nervous as with a deep breath she finally took a step back and gave her colt Roller Point a final look over. She remembered the day that the colt had been born and now here he was, the first starter in the one hundredth and forty sixth Kentucky Derby. Sarah Jones shook her head, she still could not believe it if she was honest.....her little colt would finally show the entire world who he was, and what destiny he would forge.....aiming to win The Triple Crown. Then after a moment, with a final nod Sarah then turned away from the colt and walked towards the tack room.

Once inside Sarah made her way along the rack's that adorned the wall, each with a plaque underneath that stated the starter's name, she came to Roller Point's rack immediately, all thanks to the fact he was starter one, and picked off the small bay colt's tack, slinging it across her arm as she did so. She had been assigned an assistant, being a runner in the Derby, however Sarah had told her assigned assistant to go and find a good seat to watch the Derby. If Sarah was bluntly honest? she preferred to be alone with her colt and to get him ready herself, especially before a race such as this one. After a moment and with a deep breath she then headed back out of the tack room and back into the stabling area.

"Here we go then lad" Sarah said, as the small bay colt's assigned stall door came to a close behind her, "Time to get this on" .....

It did not take Sarah long before she found herself once again taking a step back from the small bay colt "Well, look at you" Sarah breathed as the bright red and white saddle cloth with Roller Point's name emblazoned across the bottom underneath the large white number one made him all the more striking. The colt's ears pricked forwards, knowing that he was being complimented upon how he looked. Sarah chuckled with a small shake of her head "Come on then......let's do this" Sarah muttered before she took up the colt's reigns and led him out of the stabling area and into the roaring rain.
                                                                                  ---------------------------------------
"Well this is it ladies and gentlemen the moment that we and the entire racing world have been waiting for......welcome everyone to the one hundredth and forty sixth Kentucky Derby!....."

Sarah could only just slightly hear the race introductory announcement over the tannoy before it was drowned out by the roaring rain once again, they had just been let into the paddock waiting area to wait for their horses to come out, Sarah had gotten dressed into the red and black racing silks of Crown Derby Stables before she had made her way there so all that she needed now was her small bay colt Roller Point.....
                                                                                  ---------------------------------------
"And here they come ladies and gentlemen, the runners of the one hundredth and forty sixth Kentucky Derby!....first out is number one, Crown Derby Stables' Roller Point!". Sarah could not help the small smile that appeared across her face as she heard the crowds of Churchill Downs erupt into cheers and applause as Roller Point emerged into the rain, soon followed by all of the rest of the starters.
                                                                                  ---------------------------------------
After a few moments, Sarah then found herself mounting up onto Roller Point's back and heading out onto the track for the parade.....which they happened to be leading.....

Sarah could just about hear the sound of trumpets playing as she and Roller walked before the stands leading the parade of the starters as they went to the gate's. "Good luck" the rider on the leading horse next to them smiled as he un-clipped the lead-rope from Roller Point's bridle and then with a deep breath Sarah guided the small bay colt towards the starting gates.

"And first to be loaded into the gates ladies and gentlemen is number one, Crown Derby Stables' Roller Point!"

Sarah grunted as she and Roller Point were loaded up into the first gate, it was probably her least favourite part of any race....she just found it so cramped and confined. With a shake of her head however she took a deep breath and gathered up the colt's reigns into her gloved hands alongside her whip before she weaved a small section of the colt's mane also through her gloved fingers....she found it comforting......

'CLANG.......CLANG....CLANG.....'

Sarah closed her eyes for a moment as she pulled down her goggles over her eyes....there, that was the sound of the fifth gate closing....

"And so there we are ladies and gentlemen all of the starters are loaded up into the gates and are getting themselves ready....."

Sarah breathed in and out, quickly giving Roller Point a pat upon the shoulder, even if she wasn't one hundred percent ready she could always have faith in the fact that her small bay colt Roller Point was always ready.....

"And so then there seems to be only one thing left to do then ladies and gentlemen let's get this show started!...."

A roar came up from the crowd before the announcer spoke again over the tannoy....

"And THEY'RE OFF!"

The gates before them flew open with a loud 'CLANG' and Sarah held on tightly as Roller Point leapt forwards and headed out into the roaring rain....

The one hundredth and forty sixth Kentucky Derby had finally begun...
