Description

Leading up to the 2040 presidential election, the United States had been in recovery mode. A plaguelike virus causing temporary blindness had emerged around 2022, leading to an economic collapse worse than the actual effects of the virus. The rise of leftwing and rightwing warmongers at the executive level had turned Conservatives and Liberals violent, effectively to the point where politicians were routinely calling for the arrests of their opponents for the smallest hint of corruption or scandal. A majority of states no longer respected Supreme Court rulings; a few had even threatened succession, to no avail. Meanwhile, New York City and New York State had been broken up, and talks were in place to do the same with California's northern and southern parts.  By 2036, Two House Speakers had been assassinated, in addition to a Vice President and four Congressmen who had died of suspected poisoning in the span of eight years. Riots were commonplace in cities such as Seattle and Portland, and in cities such as Boston and Brooklyn, the National Guard had been present for months. In 2039, two candidates said no to all this, and vowed to greatly change America, one by reverting her back to a former time, the other by bringing about progressive policies.

Richard Warner

Home state: Michigan

Campaign slogan: “In it to win it!”

Richard Warner was born in Rochester, New York on June 1st, 1999 to Catholics Julie and Edward Warner. Warner spent the majority of his childhood attending various private schools in New York, and at the age of 16, moved to Michigan. There, he graduated from Michigan State University with a 97% average. Before running for public office, he worked as an accountant, a political advisor to then-governor Gretchen Whitmer, and ultimately ran for senate of Michigan’s 12th congressional district in 2036, where he won with 78% of the vote and enjoyed a 70% approval rating for the next four years.

In 2040, he ran and won the democratic nomination with 2,453 delegates and then chose Senator Sarah Collins to be his running mate. While he won the popular vote with 78,663,031 votes compared to Whitefoot’s 74,989,633 votes, he lost the electoral vote in a landslide victory for Whitefoot. Interestingly enough, his suffering defeat resulted in the loss of his own home state of Michigan, as well as his running mate’s home state of Wisconsin, which swung heavily to Whitefoot due to his strong policies for the rustbelt region issues of the United States.

Democratic polls show that a majority of Warner voters considered LGBT rights, abortion rights, and a universal basic income as the most important issues to them. Polls taken a week before the election indicated that just 38% of Warner's own base wanted UBI; to the middle-aged and above it was unattractive.

Republican Nominee: Chester Whitefoot

Home state: Indiana

Campaign slogan: “Let the governed govern.”

Chester Whitefoot was born on January 20th, 2003 to Sadie and Arthur Whitefoot. His family, who at the time were Jews, converted to Christianity while Chester was a child, and Chester himself converted in his early teens, according to his first published work. In 2022, he married his longtime friend, Autumn Warren. In 2024, he ran for mayor in the city of Gary, Indiana as an Independent, and narrowly won with just 53.4% of the vote. Within two years, downtown Gary was transformed into a bustling financial hub, crackdowns on crime led to the arrest of 600+ criminals, and over eight thousand abandoned homes around the city’s center were torn down. Within the year after that, investors from the Chicago-area took note of the declining crime rate in the area and began to heavily invest in the Gary area. Soon, Gary’s crime rate dropped to <1 per 1000 people, down from 41 for every 1000 years earlier. Thousands of middle-class homes were built, mansions began to emerge in the city’s Downtown and Miller Beach areas, and over four thousand Illinois residents moved to the city.

After his twelve years (or 3 terms) as mayor, Chester ran for governor of Indiana, but despite high polling numbers, he dropped out as his wife grew ill. He resumed his leadership in Gary with a fourth term. After those four years, in 2040, he was now 37, and thus able to run for the highest office on the land, which his memoir notes, that after much consideration and prayer, set his eyes on. He won the Republican nomination with 1,730 delegates, went on to choose then-governor of Ohio Matt Peele as his running mate, and on November 2nd, 2040, became president-elect. Despite garnering nearly 4 million less than his political opponent, Whitefoot won with 350 electoral votes, thanks in part to winning over 50% of urban whites and nearly 1 in 4 urban black voters.  According to polls, most Whitefoot voters considered religious freedom, gun rights, pro-life issues, school choice, and tax cuts as the most important issues to them.

Chester Whitefoot’s policies have most strongly been compared to that of former Texas Representative Ron Paul, a self-identified libertarian and thrice-tried presidential candidate. Supporters of Whitefoot identified him as a center-right populist, while opponents viewed him as nothing more than a religious bigot. Despite this, Whitefoot's policies generally paid little attention to issues of enforced morality, save for issues such as abortion, the death sentence, and war.
