Description Barn owl portrait (again I know). Painting feathers is really exhausting but in the end it worths it. I used gold paint on the feathers and gold leaves but scanner don't seem to like gold so I had to add digitally a gold texture above the gold leaves part-_-. Pity, it looks better IRL.

Tools : Gold leaves, gold paint, watercolor, pigments, ink, white acrylic, salt and coffee

Barn owls are possibly my favourites. They're so beautiful and gentle. Lovely piece.

Beautiful work, the feathers especially. And a very nice choice of colours.

Now this is so gorgeous! I love the halo and coloring that gives the owl the feel of one of those old icons.  And the owl itself is fantastic. I really like this painting.

You did a really wonderful job with that. I'd hang this up in my house. Ooooo or wear it on a navy shirt. That'd be pretty...

Just beautiful. The proportions in the face read very well, and the amount of detail you put into the feathers really paid off!

Thank you very much !  I love painting feathers but I must admit that it did test my patience. I'm glad the details on the feathers paid off

Could you edit this image by cropping the white edges and increasing the color/ brightness?

What do you mean ? I like the way the white edges frame the owl and the color/brightness matches how the colors looks IRL.

It would just look more 'finalized' if it was cropped. I like the white borders as well, but they are distracting and make this deviation look like a WIP. Not that it is, but some people might think of it that way. Also, even if the colors are supposed to look 'natural', they are kind of dull (a courtesy of your scanner, no doubt) and this deviation would be a lot more eye-catching if you added some more color to it. Especially to bring out the digitalized 'gold-leaf' effect.

Wow how does this not have more comments?
And yeah, scanners are a cuse for evey traditional artist that works with some sort of color..
I love barn owls <3 I think you captured their personality really well. The colors match and there isn't too much contrast so the black eyes stand out more. It motivates me too see that traditinal artists can do something that cool because I think it's sad how digital art took over dA and the internet..

Thank you very much for your kind words . My scanner usually works fine enough but not with gold XD.

Barn owls are my favorite type of owls. I just love their big dark eyes, their heart-shaped face and their plumage ^^.

Indeed, it's a bit sad that digital art has such a preeminent position on dA while traditional artworks seem less displayed. Both are great and beautiful but they don't have as much exposure.

With my scanner, it's mostly the yellow tones that get fucked up x)

Yeah, mine too c: They look like they're not from this world if you ask me.

Agreed. I think the problem is that it's difficult to create vibrant colors and good scans if you work traditionally, especially for beginners. While digital beginners have bright colors immidiately. Also traditional beginners often have to photograph their drawings/paintings which makes them less appealing to the interwebz audience.. To me, it seems like if you work traditionally, you only get recognized if you are really really good (or do something with unique media), while every mildly talented 10yearold gets recognition for digital work. But that is only if you draw popular fanart things, I must admit.
