The What: Lionsgate's Alpha and Omega poster in my style. Here you see Kate (left) the Alpha daughter of the wolf pack leader, a headstrong, responsible, fully girl-power-awesome she-wolf, and Humphrey (right), a wise-cracking and low-ranking Omega, before a much less detailed background of the night sky than is exhibited in the original, canon poster.
I sort of 'wolfed' them up a bit more, trying to make them look a shade more realistic (a very light shade) and almost Disney-Dog-esque, or as near as my shoddy skills can come to it.

The Why: Well, truth be told, Alpha and Omega is probably my least favorite animated movie ever, but at least it's not on my hate list. When I heard about it, I was very excited because hello, we haven't had an animated wolf movie since Balto, which was a crying shame. But then the previews came out and ugh, they don't even LOOK like real wolves. About the only thing anatomically correct, or pretending to be, is their teeth. I was woefully unimpressed with everything about the art in this movie. However, there is a certain strange, unexpected charm to it's cliche crappiness, and the voice actors did a great job. If there hadn't been singing (howling) in this movie, I probably never would have watched it again and curled my lip whenever it was mentioned. I'm a sucker for singing animals, and you know this.

HOWEVER! One cannot deny that everybody seems to genuinely like Apha and Omega, and I'm warming up to it...as long as I can draw them my way! I was excited to try this because, even if it isn't perfect, all of the mistakes can kind of be racked up to how they looked originally, and I am starting to really love adapting characters into different styles. My favorite character is actually Garth, and I like his and Lily's little side love-story much better than Kate and Humphrey's. I figured, "I'll draw the two main characters, and then I can do my faves!" Who knows? Maybe I'll even try some of the minor characters, like Kandu and Hutch and that little runty, dark-colored fellow who's a friend of Humphrey's!

The How: Sketched Humphrey first, then scanned him onto my iPad and did him with my SketchApp. I went for longer cheek fur instead of the hair-like manes they did in the movie, and settled for long chest fur because I couldn't quite get his pose right. Once I finished him, I drew Kate, scanned her in, and added her on another layer, sticking much more truly to her pose in the original poster in everything—shading, color, position—than I did with poor Humphrey.

The Problem: Kate's chest. Humphrey's...everything. Mostly his weirdly shaped chest fur, lumpy body perspective, and inaccurate coloring. Also, I strangely did not realize his mouth was open in the original poster until I finished him! I noticed most of what was wrong with Humphrey after I added in Kate and compared the two. Oh well. Better luck next time, I guess. I hope you guys like this one.
