Description Mineral(s): Fluorite
Locality: Nowaja Shaft (Schacht 78), Schottenberg, Frohnau, Erzgebirge, Saxony, Germany

Hundreds of fluorite cubes totally encrusting a matrix of drusy quartz. The fluorite crystals have mainly a lavender center, while some others have pale yellow centers. The crystals also have blue phantoms on the edges. Way better in person, and absolutely lustrous stuff.

What a beauty - and how beautifully captured! Blue / lavernder phantoms make such a lovely color mix. So if this is yours - congratulations!
If you'll ever have too much time left I'd love to see a close up of one of those in a white environment

Thank you! I shot this photo last summer so I can certainly do better now. So you'd like a close-up of some of those crystals with a white background? (if the image is close enough, the background may not be relevant)

Yes, this piece is mine's, and so are pretty much everything I've posted so far. Later on I'll include a few photos of specimens that belongs to other collectors.

So you have a great collection!

With regards to the close up - I was proposing a white environment (not just background) to have more ambient light and any inner reflections might turn out more colorful - at least that's what I would be hoping. As that's plain theory it also may just result in a faded out appearance .
I just would love to better see the varying color and transparency levels. Thank you for considering such a shot!

Well the reflection of the surface is, sadly, the result of my specimen being on my portable hard drive lol. The white surfaces I have are opaque and I don't yet have a sheet of tempered glass. So for now I can't have the surface be white unless I try something tacky such as a clear plastic bag as a surface to gain some reflections.

It's been a while since I last photographed with a white background or environment, mainly because the bright white color really affects the camera's exposure. Although I can selectively control my camera's metering to get around that, I just find a darker environment easier to control such as grey or black (unless the mineral is dark in color as well).

Finally this pic is about a year old, so another attempt and some color editing may very well produce better results next time I try!

Thank you so much for your reply! I actually wanted to avoid pushing you - sorry for doing so anyway! Blame it on curiosity :/
Thanks also for letting me know about the white environments - experiencing the same when using Luxrender - it really can be a hassle to figure out a suitable lighting environment!

In case you'll ever try to shoot it again I'll be gladly watching, in case not I'll be gladly watching your new stuff!
