Description Starcraft 2: Zerg Scourge
Modeled and textured by Phill Gonzales
Animated by Trevor Jacobs

The Zerg race features the most units not returning in Starcraft 2, luckily the Zerg Scourge was able to slip through the cracks during some tight deadlines and appear in several levels in the single player campaign. The main motivation for bringing the Scourge back was the ambience it provided. I can remember several occasions where the Scourge were lazily hovering over bases or quickly scrambling against air invaders. Despite the simplistic design of the Scourge it was great indulging the nostalgia and rejuvenating the design for Starcraft 2.

I always liked these guys.

One thing I miss in zerg air forces is a melee attacker, would be great to have some kind of "vampirelisk"

People have been making very weird comments, not just about this unit, but also the other units because that have the ring-spiked mouth rather than the carnivore jaw and rows of teeth, like the broodling, Brood Lord, Leviathan and such. I'm fine with the design, but is there a reason for the implementations?

Yes! The reason is, from a distance the spiral mouth is easier to see from game camera.

The Scourge was concepted before the Brood Lord, but we knew early on that the Scourge wouldn't be returning for Multiplayer, and we're very fortunate it showed up in Campaign at all.

When the Broodlord was concpted, the ring of spiked teeth was reused so we could showcase the look in Multiplayer and save art that was used in the cut Super Larva portrait.

Art-wise, we always though it was a cool look, it just took a while to give that design element a good home!

I hated these units in 1 since they can destroy units so quickly, while they're dirt cheap themselves. Most cost effective unit, hands down. Though I do miss it in 2. It's weird, units some people hate end up being missed when they don't make it in the next game of the series.

I agree with this. The Scourge lent so much to the feel of Zerg Bases when seen swarming above hives...

Is there any chance to implement them in HOTS multiplayer ? Maybe not as a separate unit ,but rather a part of some unit like broodlings are a part of brood lord?

There aren't any current plans for them. I'd love to see them return because there is a real "zergy" feel they lend to the game, the swarming, self sacrificing brutality is just so memorable.

Looking at the baneling nest when I first saw it gave me a neat idea for the scourge. It's basically a flying baneling, right? So it would make sense if scourge evolved from the zergling too. It would make the flying baneling nest fit even better, as well.

That's very logical, actually. Makes sense from an internal logic perspective that the zergling would evolve into either a ground attacker (baneling) or air attacker (scourge). Maybe they'll incorporate that idea into SC3 if they ever make it.

As much as I hated them destroying my Carriers, I kinda miss the Scourge.

So how's HotS getting forward? I know you cannot say much (or anything ) but maybe if it is alot of work you've gotta do or more easy work. And if everything is on schedule maybe ^__^
