"Just what is going on in that tent?""Whatever it is, it sounds very realistic!"
Given the sad passing of actor Paul Shane this week, I decided to do something based on one of the British Comedy Programmes he was in. This is based on a scene from the "Hi-De-Hi!" episode 'Partridge Season' ([link] which is a personal favourite of mine. Ironically though, Shane doesn't appear in the scene this is based on!
I have got another image lined up of a scene that involves of one Shane's most memorable lines as the Holiday Camp Host Ted Bovis, but I'll wait till I go off on Thursday morning before uploading that!
And for those of you who are wondering what on earth Punch and Judy is, it's a popular English one man puppet show, mostly adlibed to the likes of the performer as its been around for so long, no one knows for certain where it started or what the original script was! Probably explains the appearance of a crocodile halfway through!

A version rehearsed in a ARE YOU BEING SERVED Christmas episode, had a butcher. The Devil appears early to talk Punch into stealing his wares.

You know it! And the real funny thing is, they would attack it for being a violent puppet show, oh but the Jerry Springer Shows, the 24 show, the various prime time violence shows, not to mention the televangelists talking about the end of the world and how we gotta hate Muslims... *sigh*... they all get a free pass.

Well, Punch seems to have a strong impulse to hit every other character in the show with his stick. If memory serves me right it goes something like...
>Narrator comes on, introduces Punch
>Punch comes on, violently hits narrator with stick
>Punch insults audience
>Judy turns up, punch violently hits her
>Judy asks punch to watch the baby, give it to him (yeah, like that's a good idea!)
>Punch hits baby, causes it to land in a marmalade jar head first (???)
>Judy turns up again, grabs baby, Punch violently hits her, again.
>Policeman turns up, tries to arrest Punch.
>Punch takes the punishment like a good citizen, nah, just kidding, he hits him!
>Policeman goes away, most likely with a cracked skull
>Judy shows up again (Why is she still with him?!)and tells Punch to guard a string of sausages.
>Crocodile shows up, Punch starts hitting it, crocodile tries to eat him. Punch hits him some more.
...and that's all I remember anyway. It really is quite possibly the strangest show on the planet!

Punch addresses the audience.
Punch sings his silly song, then calls for Judy.
Punch pets Mr.Scaramouche's dog. Dog bites him. Punch hits dog.
Mr.Scaramouch comes and hits Punch. Punch kills Mr.Scaramouch.
Judy fetches the baby.
Punch kills the baby.
Punch & Judy fight. Punch kills Judy.
Punch talks with Pretty Polly,his mistress.
Punch rides his horse Hector. Hector throws him for no reason.
Doctor arrives and attempts to cure Punch -by hitting him with a stick (calls it "physic")
Punch kills the doctor.
Punch rings a sheep bell loudly near a gentleman's mansion. Servant comes out to make him stop. After a brief fight, Punch kills the servant.
Punch fights with a blind man,kicks him.
Constable tries to arrest Punch. Punch hits him.
Officer tries to arrest Punch.Punch hits him.
Jack Ketch (brutal 17th cent. executioner) tries to arrest Punch. punch hits him.
Lord Chief Justice of England tries to arrest Punch. Pumch hits him.
ALL 4 gang up and capture Punch.
Punch in prison. Ketch sets up the gallows. Constable brings in the coffin. Ketch asks Punch to come out and be hanged. Punch tricks him and then hangs him !
Punch is then attacked by the Devil.
Punch fights the Devil, and then KILLS the Devil !

One quick search later, and here is the perfect example of what makes this show brilliant, complete with all the ad-libbing!
