Description Experimenting with Custom Brushes in Artrage. Loaded into Photoshop for final touches. (Ended up looking a bit like some of the other "staring girl" digital portraits on dA - but heck, it was an experiment.)

Rich, warm color. Very pretty face, though a little lumpy in the figure.
The contrast on the left side of the page is low against the head, where you have the hair blending with the background. The head needs to be framed (it's the center of interest). As you may guess, my opinion is that the backgrounds are out of synch and would work better if reversed.

As for other works, a touch of ultramarine or green to cool down parts of those dark darks and accent the lights would complete the illusion of depth.

The simple symmetry of the composition risks monotony. Do you really want the face - the center of interest - that high, centered, and with the head touching the top border? (no. no. and no.)

With a simple verticle arrangement, it's good to go with portrait framing instead of landscape. The extra space here adds nothing.

All - in - all, very nice, especially the face. the sweep of the garment is inviting - too bad you didn't do this portrait-wise so we could follow it down and around.

Hey, Sol-Can -- I appreciate your comments as always.

I should point out that it was more of an exercise in understanding another software tool, so there wasn't as much planning as there could have been. I did however try out a limited palette which you had suggested earlier. I also tried the dark/light background idea (but the placing of the lighting didn't quite mesh with it -- I guess it'll have to wait for next time).

Yes, an exercise - you made that clear in artist's comments. No prob. Mine is admittedly a Counsel of perfection. (What real criticism is not?) I just go through the categories and score what I see. I try not to pick, but when several areas are related it's natural to pull them together.

Your finish is technically refined and quite delicious. My concern is that the structural foundation is wanting. I thought you were on the right track practicing freehand drawing, as difficult as it must have been to (in your mind) go backward to it. But, apparently, the color calls. It's a temptation that's difficult to resist.

Still, you can't be noodling with ARTRAGE all the time, so do some pencil and ink when time permits - linear and tonal. Their limitations will force a confrontation with things that color helps avoid.

An apt observation. I am still doing the freehand stuff -- haven't stopped doing that. But I don't want to lose the progress I made in other areas whilst doing it. So, I'm finding myself doing a bit of juggling..

That is probably and understatement. Hehe. That's the biggest challenge of art, I think. There really is no definitive of even logical starting point. You just jump in and then it comes flying at you from all directions. What can one do, except grab on to what comes naturally to him and build on it?

The lessons handed down always reduce to "master fundamentals" - by whatever wending, winding way one can manage. hehe.
