Description The first four questions. This is super fun. I think I'll do a few of Maryland's now and then go back and do the rest of VA's.

If you want to ask VA a question as well, you can do so here: [link]

1.) (This one was epically fun, haha.) Virginia/Blackbeard's severed head OTP.

Of course I remember Blackbeard. Who on the East Coast doesn’t remember him? He terrorized us all, but sometimes I felt like he had it for me the most. I remember when he came to patrol the Chesapeake Bay, everyone was so scared of him that they would simply go and hide away! I remember for a span of about 6 weeks, not a single ship sailed for fear of meeting him. The British Navy—incompetent as they were—did absolutely nothing useful for us. And of course, North Carolina being an irresponsible proprietary colony didn’t even care that they were providing asylum to such a character. So one day, my governor decided to take matters into his own hands. He sent Lieutenant Robert Maynard and his crew—in which I just had to sneak along! (this was before I had boobs to make things difficult)—to Ocracoke Island, where he knew that Blackbeard was lurking. What happened next is quite incredible! I can’t remember all the details—it’s been over 250 years, after all!—but the battle was such a blast! As we approached to attack, we saw Blackbeard steer his ship right into a sandbar, and then during the battle our own ship met the same fate. Maynard ordered us all to hide below decks as Blackbeard boarded our ship, expecting to find us all dead. Instead, we surprised him by attacking from all directions! He fought us hard, but in the end we killed that bastard and kept his head as a souvenir. We impaled it on a stake and displayed it proudly in Virginia, just in case anyone ever forgot what us Virginians do to people who cross us.

So yes, he was a horrible person. But admittedly a brilliant pirate by any means. In the end, though, he just couldn’t win against the power of a bunch of pissed-off Virginians.

2.) Did I pass your test, ? lol. I've been to Virginia Beach a few times but it's mostly just been passing through to go somewhere else. Like coming from the eastern shore on the Chesapeake Bay bridge going to Williamsburg or stuff like that. Maybe one time I'll actually get to stop there and look around for real. Oddly enough, I knew several people from Virginia during the time I lived in Kansas, and they all seemed to be from VA Beach. In fact, that seems to be a pretty common connection, as whenever I go anywhere near Fort Leavenworth there are always a ton of Virginia license plates. In other words, I guess there's nowhere you can go to escape. muhaha.

Virginia Beach, of course! Oh gosh, where to begin? Virginia Beach is my largest city, and the 39th largest city in the nation, with over 430,000 people, can you believe it? It’s located where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, making it an ideal location for military operations, sailing adventures, prime real estate, and awesome beaches! It’s part of the Hampton Roads district, which also includes Chesapeake, Newport News, Portsmouth, and Williamsburg. Despite being so close to so many relics of my past (in fact, Cape Henry, just right over there, was the place where the Jamestown colonists first landed), Virginia Beach is truly a modern and growing city. It’s barely even 100 years old, in fact! Maybe you’ve heard of the one of the greatest engineering marvels of the world, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (or at the vest least, have seen pictures of it). It begins in my part of the Delmarva Peninsula and runs 23 MILES to Virginia Beach! Yeah that’s right. This freakin bridge is 23 miles long. Oh, and did I mention that half of it is underwater? Bet you’ve never seen anything like that before! There are only eight like it in the entire world, and I have three of them. Ha!

Yes, from humble beginnings as a rural backwater south of Williamsburg, and then a small resort town in the late 1800s, it has grown to be one of the biggest cities in the nation and an indisputable leader in national defense. Among its many army and navy bases, it has Naval Air Station Oceana, where the Navy keeps many of its awesome fighter jets! A lot of the people who live around here are in the military, so sometimes they don’t stick around too long, but I do so love to spend time around so many heroes who sacrifice so much of their life for their nation.

Did I mention the beautiful weather here? Even though we’re rather far north, many plants that are usually associated with the Deep South can grow here, like Spanish Moss, Palmettos, and even some palm trees! Come for our business—we have many Fortune 500 companies—and technology, stay for the weather and beaches! Trust me, it’s the best part of the Atlantic Coast.

I could go on for years about Virginia Beach, let me tell you! And for some reason, I feel like you could too!

3.) South Carolina is a sexy beast. Back off, ladies. He’s mine. Well, whenever I want him, anyway. He certainly does know how to treat a lady right. So addicting…

(I don't picture them as in a relationship per se, but they definitely have a pretty intense FWB thing going on. I guess in Facebook terms their relationship status would be "it's complicated." I think both of them are kind of afraid of commitment, afraid that after so many years together, they would just get bored of each other and then it would be the end. I guess they are just so used to the idea of things ending--human lives, human relationships, human friendships--that they just assume it will be the same for them.)

4.) (I dunno how much historical!Lee and 1776!Lee have in common, but considering now I can't picture one without the other, the line between reality and fiction has been somewhat blurred in my mind. 1776!Lee is just too much fun.)

I know what you’re picturing, anon.

I used to be very close to Richard and his family. Even at that point, the Lees had been in my life for as long as I could remember. (As one of the First Families of Virginia, they could trace their ancestry almost as far back as Jamestowne). Richard and his grandson, I think, were the ones who loved me the most. Richard was always very enthusiastic about everything (sometimes a bit too much so), completely dedicated to the idea of independence from the beginning. I remember all those days in Williamsburg when he tried so hard to fully convince me that becoming independent from Great Britain was actually a brilliant idea that would realistically work. I mean, I had expressed my desire to separate before that, but I was still kind of uneasy about it until he really inspired me to just go for it. He said to me, “all of you United colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states” and asked me if I had anything to lose by taking the plunge. And I said, “I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain.” And then he said, “I know you well, Virginia, and mark my words, when you’re independent you shall do even greater things.”

And in the end, he was the one who ended up presenting the proposal for independence back in Philadelphia. Quite a feat, I’d say. He was truly a born leader. Oh, but of course. He was born in Virginia, after all.

sometimes a cigarette is just a cigarette...

Blackbeard actually died in NC, a place called Okracoke Island, which was basically just a haven for all sorts of piracy and vices. But Blackbeard had pissed off the Virginians so much that the governor sent a party of ships down there with orders to basically kill Blackbeard or die trying. So he ended up being killed by a bunch of angry Virginians, and subsequently his severed head was displayed on the bow of their ship as it sailed back to Williamsburg, and then one they got there, according to one source I read, was hung on a pike in Williamsburg for several more days/weeks. So apparently Virginia has a thing for severed heads.

Yes you have. :3 I just had the need to hear someone else say how amazing that place was being my favorite city to live in and all. Aside from being a Resort City and where we can make fun of tourist, *shot* it feels good to be in the region where "it all began". And there's a weird fondness of mermaids there in some places of Hampton Roads. Haha.

Haha that's good.

VA Beach is kind of an interesting place to me, because it seems like it sums up Virginia so well in just one city. It's a pretty new/modern city but it's also very rich in history and pride. Like that intersection of new and old is something that really screams VA to me.

For some reason I have an urge to draw various states as mermaids now.

At least it sums up the "more urban and city parts" of Virginia well. We don't talk about Appalachia much for embarrassment. XD Naw, that's just where the "real Southern" parts are.
But Hampton Roads is pretty much Old Dominion's icon when you don't think about NoVA (Northern Virginia. When he's not at work with DC, he likes to have fun and be alittle silly around some states, sort of the older brother complex if you will. Can be stern and protective when needed to be but would much rather relax for a bit. That's how I portray VA.

Haha! That's totally VA's fault! When I lived there, you can almost see mermaids everywhere in some of the cities!
