Description Calling this a part of my state series is a misnomer, as Washington, DC isn't a state.

But don't remind him of that fact. He'll get pissed off and launch into a 3 -hour-long rant about the multitude of reasons why he *should* be.

For now, he's Constitutionally forbidden from statehood and no one is very willing to bend over backward to change the Constitution just for him, so his biggest dream seems quite out of reach.

I actually designed him a few months ago, when I first came to live in DC. What I tried to do with his character was strike a balance between DC's political role and its own unique culture. I think that a lot of people only see DC as a place inhabited solely by evil politicians, equally evil lobbyists, and thousands of bureaucrats. To them, DC is the Mall, a city where there are no ordinary buildings or houses, only monuments, memorials, museums, and government offices. Few people see Washington, DC for the city it is beyond the shiny touristy stuff.

His human age is 21, and not 19 like the other states, because I designed the other states with Hetalia ages in mind. Now that I'm breaking away from that, I have a different aging system in mind. Eventually I'll update the other profiles to reflect this change.

Some facts about DC:
-He's biracial, half black and half white. Not because of Obama; but because his demographic distribution is pretty much exactly that. He has blue eyes like his sister Maryland.

-He's very short for a guy; only about 5'3. And, much to his chagrin, he has a rather high-pitched voice to match. This, along with his lack of statehood, makes him very insecure. He tries to make up for it by overcompensating and coming off as arrogant.

-He can't seem to stay in the same job for more then three or four years. After two years, he starts getting restless and wants to move on. He's worked at hundreds of different jobs over the years, both in and out of government. This is not because he is indecisive or lazy; it is simply what people do in DC. (Don't let the revolving door hit you on the way out...)

-The states tend to blame him for everything, and they don't realize that he gets screwed over by the government as much as anyone, if not more so. (You can read all about DC's plight here: [link] )

-Washington, DC is one of the most Democratic cities in the nation.

-Washington, DC is often called "the Hollywood for ugly people," and it's very often true. Thousands of people come to DC every year hoping to make it big in politics, but few ever do.

The Metro Map is Β©WMATA.

"On the weekends, he can often be found in the company of attractive young women (and occasionally men) and lots of strong liquor."

I have a feeling I'm taking that sentence the wrong way. Sorry, had to say it. I can't believe I haven't commented on this yet. I think this is my favorite DC character so far. xD

haha thanks. It's my favorite city in the world, so I hope I can do it some justice. I want to get the message across that Washington, DC is not just the government. If anything, the city itself is so often in conflict with the government. It is really a fascinating place full of surprises.

DC is a very equal-opportunity lover. Of course you'll never see him admitting this to the wider world and giving some people yet one more reason to hate him.

Yeah, I grow a bit tired of seeing DC characters where his personality is little more then that of a corrupt politician/government official. No offense meant to anyone who does have a character like that of course, but I think to often people forget a DC state-tan shouldn't just represent the government, but the city itself as well as the people who live there. Poor DC, be proud of who you are kind sir! I saw that rainbow badge on your bag son. Though you could just like rainbows. I know I do.

For that reason, a secret pet peeve of mine is white!DC. I mean, I understand why people do it, but imo, a city that has historically always been majority black ought to be at least partially black. (Like this spring there was an editorial in the WaPo freaking out about the fact that more white people were moving into the city and ruining the great African-American culture, haha). That's just me, though.

Douuuble raaainboooow.

Oh no, I agree with you. Personally I actually kind of imagine DC as black/white mixed. I think that's a good way to go with the character. I don't know why, but I like the idea of the states being born from normal humans. Certainly makes things more interesting in my mind. In my head-canon his parents died off when he was fairly young and he was thus raised by Maryland and Virginia until Virginia left and took their land back. Then it was just him and Maryland (though I imagine Pennsylvania helped out throughout his childhood as well). Though my head-canon Virginia is also a guy so they kind of served as his parents in my mind and I kind of ship VAxMD. *Shot.*

Nothing makes me want to facepalm more then a pale white DC with blonde hair and blue eyes though. I'm all like whhhy! Not that I can really talk. Most of the Southern states have a high African-American culture as well and the only ones I really picture being black in my head are Mississippi and Louisiana. Then again I'm quite the strange person. Delaware, Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma are all in least half Native American in my head. California and Texas are white/Spanish mixed. Florida is full on Spanish. New Mexico and Arizona are Spanish/Native American, etc.

I actually really like the idea of states being born to normal humans. It's one of those ideas that I like to toy with in my mind occasionally, haha. It kind of makes me wonder then, how would they end up with these supernatural qualities? Is it like Harry Potter, where they're just born that way to normal parents, or would the powers be bestowed on them after their birth somehow? How do you see it?

Virginia is such a deadbeat, lol. Clock out after only a few decades in the kid's life and still reap the benefits of having the nation's capital in your backyard. *Shakes head* What an asshole. If you can't take care of your kid, you don't get to use the Potomac River , nyah. (Note the date on that case, btw. lol)

I'd like to think they are born special, though it might not be noticable until they are a few years old rather then at birth. I just kind of like the strangeness of it all, that such a powerful being could somehow be born to a mere mortal. Another of the world's mysteries.

VA and MD are STILL fighting over that damn river!? Well, it is a rather lovely area once you think about it. I've seen some beautiful photos of the Potomac.

Rejoice and love yourself today, 'cause baby you were born this way. haha.

I think it would be pretty obvious after a few years, when the other kids their age start growing up, while they stay the same age. Or do they age normally for awhile (like to a certain age) and then stop aging at a normal rate? There are so many plot ideas that could be built on that concept alone. They'd obviously be seen as freaks, possibly witches or demons, and probably treated as outcasts. How would they figure out what they were? I mean, it's not like they get a Hogwarts letter on their 11th birthday, lol. Is it something they'd have to figure out gradually on their own or is it just something people would know by spending time with them? I mean, obviously the younger ones would have an easier time of it, but I can imagine that it would be pretty scary for the first ones. I tend to think of these things as realistically/historically accurate as possible, so like, think about it, communication is horrible. It takes months for news to travel from Europe to the colonies, and even then, it's not like these kids would even know that there were people like them over there anyway. How would they have any way of knowing at all? They would be pretty much alone in their communities, stuck at that age where they realize they're different, but too young to realize why.

It goes back to something I've thought about a lot, whether having these supernatural qualities would be a blessing or a curse. I think it would be a good indicator of a states' mindset how they answered that question.

Gah, sometimes I feel like I'm always writing some sort of "Philosophy of Anthropomorphic Personification 101" essay. haha.

Wouldn't it be awesome if every argument you had with your peers went automatically to the Supreme Court? Though I'm sure the Supreme Court has many things they'd rather be doing than acting as conflict counselors, haha.

I blame my interest in law for my personified state obsession, or maaaaybe vice versa. Studying constitutional law makes it way too easy. Way way too easy.

I'm somewhat of the opinion that a state or country for that matter would just automatically sense if someone was like them even if they hadn't met them previously. However, I can see what you mean. For the original 13 it would have been terribly difficult at first. The colonies probably would have only been to interact with their closer neighbors if at all in the early years. However obviously the founders, governors, or people looking after the colonies would know what they are considering England's counties are pretty much the equivalent to America's states right? Perhaps even some of them came across sea for awhile to oversee things. For DC I think it would have been relatively easier. As soon as the country realized who and what he was he had MD and VA to look after him. Meanwhile other second generation states had the first generation states. For example, I can actually see PA looking after a young OH and MI. I imagine they where very rowdy and bratty children (especially towards each other) and not many others had enough patience for them.

boscaresque In reply to TopazRaven [2011-10-09 04:44:50 +0000 UTC]

I can definitely see that. About them having some sort of sixth sense that lets them recognize others. I can just imagine it would be so comforting to have someone else around who understands. Then again, the colonies fought a lot in the beginning, so maybe it didn't make any difference.

Hm. I suppose England's counties would be sort of like the states. It kind of makes me wonder if all the world's administrative districts would get a personification of some kind. I mean, it's undoubtable the the U.S. states have considerable power relative to some other kinds of administrative districts. I mean, the entire name of the nation is The United States of America, and technically (if not in actuality), the states share sovereignty with the federal government. (Speaking of that, I imagine that the issue of states' right is still probably the most controversial topic you could possibly bring up around the states.)

The second generation states definitely had it easier. Then again, they had the thirteen originals to raise them, so...I can't imagine it being the most organized or functional childhood. haha. But they did certainly try. I actually always picture the early 19th century being a pretty happy time for the states, at least relatively speaking. They're all so proud of themselves and excited about the future and it's kind of cute. Like, if you read primary sources from the period, there's just this huge aura of patriotism and a sort of innocently enthusiastic portrayal of Americana.

I can just imagine Alaska and Hawaii being the most spoiled kids ever, though.

TopazRaven In reply to boscaresque [2011-10-09 14:09:15 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it depends a lot on which colony and who they were with. Even if they were fighing over land I could still see them finding comfort in not being alone, not to mention they had their overseers: England, France, Spain, Netherlands, etc. Though personally I don't think England would have cared much about the colonies as people. Just interested in using them. Poor kids.

Lol, probably. I've noticed US states alone have a bit more power then areas like them in other countries except for maybe Canada's provinces/territories. I do like to think each country does have it's own people like the states. For example England has countries, Italy and France have regions, Japan has prefectures and Russia I believe has major cities and federal republics? It's all a rather interesting thing to think about.

Oh I can agree. They need to be happy for a little while at some point in least. xD Ahhhaha! Maybe Hawaii. I imagine Alaska being very shy and lonely due to being cut off from the rest of the country (even though HI is more far away I imagine he'd be a very cheerful and optimistic kinda guy). In reality it was probably the Canadians who looked after her since they were closer. That poor kid is probably traumitized. First owned by Russia then sold off to America once she wasn't 'usefull' anymore.

Pfft that song is the theme song of my life.

Whenever I'm riding an escalator now anywhere, I always ALWAYS stand to the right and get super pissed when people stand on the left. Even if it's at like, a mall or something where it doesn't even matter.

I also love "Saudis in Audis." lmfao.
