"If you want to see an Imp Bridge Officer's trousers turn a darker shade of grey, just tell them you've got a squadron of B-Wings on an attack vector headed their way. That'll do the trick." - Wedge Antilles regarding the B-Wing.

The B-Wing Starfighter was one of the few Rebel Original starfighters developed in-house by the Rebellion. The Rebels were suffering major losses as a result of relying largely on the aging Y-Wing for their bombing and anti-capital ship attacks and needed a new ship. It was clear to Rebel leadership that they needed a new starfighter. The result was the B-Wing. The first designs of the B-Wing was a starfighter prototype referred to as the B6 and was developed alone and in secret by highly respected yet eccentric Mon Calamari starship designer Phalr Quarrie. Quarrie gifted the prototype B-Wing to the Rebellion but Quarrie sadly passed away before the Rebels could even use it. The prototype design was ambitious with a composite beam weapon that could cripple an entire Imperial Cruiser with a single shot. However the cost of constructing multiple fighters based on the B6 was so outlandish that Rebel leadership shelved the prototype for later.

It wasn't until the rescue and recruitment of Admiral Gial Ackbar that the B-Wing began to take shape. Ackbar, a close friend of Quarrie's, had heard of the prototype and asked to review the schematics to the B6. Ackbar proceeded to make a copy of the schematics and used the B6 design as a template for what would eventually become the traditional B-Wing. The B-Wing design by Ackbar was far cheaper although it lost the composite beam weapon as well as the gunner's cockpit on the lower wing. Ackbar's design also allowed for a rotating cockpit, enabling the pilot to use the B-Wing to attack from multiple angles and to confuse enemy gunners although this proved to be quite the hassle for even ace pilots and more often than not broke down in mid-flight, causing maneuvering problems. As a result, most B-Wings have had the rotating gyros disabled on the cockpit or set to rotate only a quarter of the way in either direction so that the cockpit was atop the fighter instead of with the fighter's hull out to the port or starboard side of the cockpit.

The B-Wing became an excellent Assault Starfighter that specialized in taking on Imperial capital ships with minimal escorts. The B-Wing has remained a mainstay of the New Republic but is typically reserved for ace pilots and even then most aces have shied away from the B-Wing in favor of more specialized craft such as the X-Wing or Y-Wing. The original plan with the B-Wing was for it to eventually replace the aging Y-Wing but the costs of constructing and maintaining fleets of B-Wings have made this a very difficult prospect. Even with the Shadow Wars having broken out in 28 ABY, the B-Wing typically takes a backseat in terms of production priority compared to the newer T-70 X-Wing and BTL-B2 Y-Wing, the large bunker busting K-Wings, and the fast and nimble A-Wings. B-Wings are still in regular production but are typically reserved for specialized assignments against enemy capital ships and other large targets.

Despite their relatively low usage, the sight of a squadron of B-Wings barreling towards a squadron of capital ships is enough to make any fleet commander nervous. Firaxa Squadron, a squadron of Republic pilots based out of Manaan have painted their B-Wings with grinning faces reminiscent of the Firaxa Shark native to Manaan. Firaxa Squadron is legend in the sector for having gone on a twelve ship killing spree when the Sith attempted to invade one of the neighboring systems, the squadron using exclusively B-Wings and reducing the Sith's invasion fleet to hulks of burning scrap in space before the squadron had to flee, but not without losing a little over half of their own fighters in the process. This incident was enough to convince Republic military command that the B-Wing was still viable and helped to dismiss any early thoughts of discontinuing the assault fighter.

Admiral Ackbar's niece, Admiral Jesmin Ackbar, a veteran B-Wing Pilot, has proudly advocated the use of the B-Wing, citing the B-Wing's effectiveness as an assault fighter. The biggest disadvantages of the B-Wing, compared to the Y-Wing it was meant to replace, is its lighter armor, lower maneuverability, larger profile, high learning curve in piloting the craft, and overall cost. In spite of these disadvantages the B-Wing is still considered better than the Y-Wing. The B-Wings are typically used for long range assaults against enemy targets, when capital class vessels are unable to approach or unavailable to deploy K-Wings into the combat zone.

A common point of contention amongst starfighter enthusiasts is that the B-Wing does not resemble the letter B. Some claim the fighter does, in fact, resemble a B when looked at it from a certain angle. Others claim the source is that the B-Wing's sword-shaped appearance made it look like a "blade" cutting through space, thus the name "Blade-wing" or "B-Wing." Admiral Ackbar and other B-Wing pilots have quietly washed their hands of the debate and refuse to engage in it. Due to the infamy of the B-Wing's cockpit gyros, some pilots have dryly suggested that the true name is the "Barf-wing." This term has morphed into pilot and maintenance talk for whenever their B-Wing gyros malfunction (e.g. "I've got a barf-wing here!").
