Description This is one of the ships from my canceled Star Wars Fanfiction Series: Star Wars: The Shadow Wars.

Note: The information below is from my own universe which is a blend of old and new canon and is not to be considered canon in any other universe but mine. I should also mention that this ship is canon (or at least Legacy Canon) but its history is significantly different as far as my universe is concerned.

"Don't underestimate these old corvettes. They're fast, and can produce a formidable fighter screen. There's a reason they're nicknamed 'Blockade Runners' after all." - Rahm Kota, regarding the CR90 Corvette.

When the Corellian Engineering Corporation developed the old CR70 Corvette a few years before the Clone Wars, they had no idea that it would become the major hit it did. The CR70 was a new spin on an old design by the Corellians, effectively rolling the old Thranta Class Hammerhead Corvettes on their sides and rounding out the forward "Hammer." The CR70s would prove popular with diplomats, surpassing and replacing the older Consular Class Cruisers as diplomatic transports. As the Grand Army of the Republic had refit most of their Consulars for wartime service during the Clone Wars, most diplomats would come to prefer the CR70. Over the years, various groups would modify the CR70s with armaments that would commonly resemble the future CR90 model in terms of armament.

After the Clone Wars, Corellia developed the CR90, a better armed and upgraded variant of the CR70. Some within the company questioned the need for an upgrade for an already successful corvette model but the critics were quickly silenced when sales of the new CR90 and the CR90 Conversion Kits for the CR70s eclipsed that of the CR70 within the first year of the CR90's release. The newer CR90s boasted more firepower and proved highly useful in fending off pirate starfighters and bombers attempting to disable them. Add to that the CR90s speed, and the corvette became a viable choice for smugglers and spice runners in running Imperial Blockades. The budding Rebellion made heavy use of the CR90 as a starfighter killer and blockade runner during the Galactic Civil War, to the point that the CR90 earned the nickname of "Rebel Blockade Runner" by Rebel and Imperial alike.

The Rebellion's in-house Alliance Underground Engineering Corps managed to acquire the schematics to the CR90 from Rebel Sympathizers within Corellian Engineering Corporation, which proved to be a huge boon to the Rebellion as they were able to manufacture their own corvettes. The Mon Calamari MC75s proved useful in this role, acting as mobile shipyards for Corvette sized craft and smaller, being able to churn out at least one CR90 a month. After the war, the New Republic surrendered the schematics back to the Corellians and commissioned additional CR90s from Corellia for service within the New Republic fleet. The Corellians even reverse engineered a special upgrade kit based on the modifications to the late Captain Raymus Antilles' Sundered Heart, releasing the CR90-A, a faster and more powerful CR90 exclusively for New Republic Military service. Although newer ships have been rolled out with intent to replace it, the CR90 still proudly continues its service to the New Republic even into the Shadow Wars as of 28 ABY and are considered a staple of any New Republic fleet, receiving periodic upgrades to its weapons, shields, engines, and other systems. The CR90s have become symbolic of the New Republic as a result.

In addition to the CR90-As, there are also two variants to the CR90. The first is a cargo variant, dubbed the CR90 Hauler, that eliminates most of the passenger space and relocates the escape pods in favor of a large and open cargo hold. This version is often favored by shipping companies. The Rebels often would use these ships when blockades weren't as much of an issue. One such CR90 Hauler was used in the evacuation of Echo Base and made it to join the rest of the fleet. Another variant was the carrier variant, dubbed the CR90 FarStar variant after a CR90 that had been modified to carry a small number of starfighters. The namesake of the class only had hangar space on its starboard side but the proper CR90 FarStar carrier has hangar space on both sides, capable of carrying up to 20 Starfighters. The CR92a Assassin-Class Corvette is often confused as a variant of the CR90 but it is not. Internal configurations are notably different and most CR90 parts are incompatible with Assassin Corvettes.

The CR90's biggest weakness however was a "soft spot" behind the dorsal sensor dish, perilously close to the main reactor. A direct hit could compromise the reactor and destroy the vessel if the reactor isn't shut down right away. However this leaves the CR90 vulnerable as weapons, shields, and engines are tied to the main reactor, leaving life support, internal power, and other systems to operate off of a secondary reactor. It was this weakness that was unknowingly exploited by the gunners of the Star Destroyer Devastator when it pursued and crippled the Tantive IV over Tatooine in year zero. Attempts to remove this weakness have not proven effective or have proven detrimental to the CR90 in other ways. Another weakness of the CR90 was it lacked a full 360 degree firing arc due to its large engine configuration, an issue not experienced by its Corellian Gunship cousin. It could still fire at enemies behind it but only if they flew above or below the engines.

There are three CR90s of note. The first is the Sundered Heart, once Captained by Captain Raymus Antilles during the early Rebellion. The Sundered Heart managed to outlive its Captain and presently serves as Chancellor Leia Organa-Solo's secondary diplomatic vessel of choice after her husband's Millennium Falcon. The Sundered Heart, as mentioned above, became the template for the CR90-A variant of the CR90, and is also the last surviving vessel still registered to the Royal House of Alderaan. The second is the Spirit of Obi-Wan, which acts as the flagship of the Jedi Flotilla.

And finally, the most historically significant: the Tantive IV. The Tantive IV had been part of the Royal House of Alderaan, starting as a CR70 during the Clone Wars, and being upgraded to CR90 specs sometime afterwards. The Tantive IV served as Bail Organa's vessel throughout the Clone Wars and later became his daughter Leia's transport during the early Rebellion. In Year Zero, the Tantive IV was on Yavin IV as Princess Leia Organa met with Rebel leaders about possible strategies that could be taken to oppose the Empire. Prior to the meeting, Leia had learned from her father that Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi had been in exile on Tatooine since the end of the Clone Wars and was to bring this information to the Rebel Commanders. Rahm Kota, the only Jedi present at the meeting (Galen Marek was off on a mission to Dantooine to aid the Rebels there at the time), suggested Leia go meet with Obi-Wan to try and convince him to join the Rebellion. Before she could however, word reached the Rebels that the Death Star plans were vulnerable on Scarif (although Rebel agents revealed Scarif was a trap and the real plans were on Danuta). Leia volunteered to accompany the Rebels to Scarif but Rahm refused. Leia would end up defying his order and had the Tantive IV dock in the large hangar bay of Admiral Raddus's MC75, the Profundity. The Tantive IV remained docked with the Profundity throughout the battle until the Death Star plans were transmitted to the fleet from Rebel Agent Kyle Katarn who had just stolen them from Danuta. The plans were quickly transfered to the Tantive IV which then promptly dropped free from the crippled Profundity and fled to Tatooine with Darth Vader's Star Destroyer, Devastator hot on its exhausts. The Tantive IV was pursued and caught at Tatooine. The corvette was crippled from a direct hit to the soft spot behind the aft sensor dish and forced to shut down its systems. The Rebels aboard quickly mounted a last stand while Leia transferred the plans to her faithful astromech droid R2-D2. R2 and the protocol Droid C-3PO then boarded an escape pod and escaped to the planet below. In the end, the Tantive IV's last mission was rousing Pyhrric Victory for the Rebellion, as although the Tantive IV would be destroyed after its capture, with no survivors of its crew short of the two droids and Princess Leia, its actions directly led to the Destruction of the Death Star and to the recruitment of Captain Han Solo, Chewbacca, and future Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker.
