One of the first frigates developed and deployed by the Kushan, the Matriarch Support Frigate was designed to act as a mid-combat repair facility for fighters and corvettes. The Matriarch's earliest form was as a temporary refueling vessel for the various construction vehicles used during the construction of the scaffold and the Mothership over Kharak. Afterwards, the frigates were decommissioned and the schematics slightly reworked into the more recognizable Matriarch. The schematics were then uploaded to the Mothership PDAs. After encountering the Taiidan Assault Frigates over the destroyed Kharak, command realized that they would need frigate class vessels to counter the Taiidan's own. Additionally, they knew that larger vessels may exist and that they may be able to cause significant damage to the Mothership. Command quickly commissioned the Matriarchs for their massive "Repair Beams" that could repair the Mothership of any damage she sustained on the journey. The Matriarchs could also repair frigates and other capital ships if necessary. As they had only one weapon and most of the ships they would be repairing would be coming to them or were slow moving capital ships, the Matriarchs were able to divert most of their power to their engines, making them the fastest frigates in the Kushan fleets.

Despite their important role, most frigate and capital ship commanders grew wary of the Matriarchs as there was a glaring flaw in the "Repair Beams" that was used by both Mercy Repair Corvettes and Matriarchs. The beam computers could not distinguish organic matter from inorganic, leading to accidental deaths. Post-repair inspections would sometimes find unfortunate crew members grotesquely fused into bulkheads. This led to a policy of evacuating damaged sections of capital ships before repairs went underway, with many crew members rushing towards areas untargeted by the repair beams. Kiith S'Jet tried for years for a means of refining this but it was ultimately Kiith Somtaaw with the Micro-PDA systems installed on the newer Disciple Class Workers that ultimately solved the problem, leading to the retirement of the Mercy and Matriarch vessels.

There are only a handful of Matriarchs left, most of them having been decommissioned and put on display as museum pieces at the Hiigaran Fleet Museum.

one of my favorite ships, I use it to follow and repair a destroyer while servicing a squadron of BOTH fighters & corvettes; any suggestions on tactics?

I usually do the same thing. I assign a group of 10 repair corvettes and 5 Support Frigates to repair my destroyers/heavy cruisers whilst sending the capital ships in to smash up the enemy forces. The Heavies are guarded by roughly 30 frigates (usually 15 Assault, 15 Drone, so about 5A/5D per Heavy Cruiser) to deal with fighters and corvettes and leave the frigates and capitals to the Destroyers/Heavy Cruisers. The AI always targets the Supports first even on easy so they're going to go down early on. But this gives me a window to target their ships and wipe out a fairly large swath of them before even losing all of my supports. If it's a Carrier only game, I do 10/10/10 (Ten Assault, Ion, and Drone frigates) with the supports assigned to handle all the frigates. Regardless of game type, I have 3 Gravity Wells assigned to guard the capital ships and at least follow them so as to trap any would-be jumpers. (The AI always likes to hyperspace carriers away if they get too badly damaged).

I only play against the AI so take these strategies with a grain of salt.

But between the Kushan and Taiidan, I've always preferred the Taiidan Support Frigate more. It looks kinda like a real-world aircraft carrier.
