"Never thought I'd be happy to see a squadron of TIE Interceptors headed towards me again." - Eclipse Squadron Leader Solan Eclipse.

The TIE/IN, while not quite as iconic as the classic TIE/LN TIE Fighter, was arguably the most lethal member of the TIE family of starfighters built during the reign of the Galactic Empire. While the TIE Defender and TIE Advanced X1 were certainly better equipped, the TIE Interceptor was simply more mass produced and by the end of the Galactic Civil War, was estimated to have the highest kills per capita of the entire TIE series, and this was without having deflector shields equipped which would drastically increase their survivability. This is due in no small part to the fact that the TIE Interceptor was more readily deployed than the TIE Defender (and far more available than the Advanced X1), with TIE Interceptors being the second most common TIE Fighter model after the original TIE/LN itself and only slightly surpassing the TIE Bomber.

Like most of the TIE series, the TIE Interceptor fell out of prominence following the Fall of the Empire. Following the war, the remaining TIE Interceptors were largely scrapped or sold off to various groups and individuals. Common modifications made to the TIE Interceptor was the removal of the chin mounted laser cannons and replacing them with different armaments such as concussion missile launchers, ion cannons, or other features. The addition of hyperdrives and deflector shields were also common after-market upgrades. Some would also see dedicated life-support systems added, albeit at the cost of losing the chin guns.

The 501st Legion, while having largely abandoned the TIE series save for TIE Defenders and a handful of specialty TIEs, has continued using the TIE Interceptor (501st TIE/IN shown above). Each 501st carrier vessel usually has at least one wing or more of TIE Interceptors, all modified with deflector shields and class 3 hyperdrives. Their chin guns have been replaced with multipurpose warhead launchers, usually stocking concussion missiles although mag pulses are sometimes equipped. Because the Legion still uses TIE Pilot armor (and the next generation variant there of), the lack of built-in life support remains a non-issue.

The deadliest squadron within the 501st Legion is the 501st's Black Squadron, a wing of TIE Interceptor pilots that, while normally acting as the wing command for fighters in the field also double as the wing guard for whenever the 501st's Commanding Officer goes into combat. Ordinarily this is Jedi Lord Anakin Skywalker, but Black Squadron has been known to fly as escort for other members of the Skywalker family, including Luke Skywalker and Jacen Solo.

The Sith Empire has not continued using TIE Interceptors (along with all but the basic TIE/LN Fighters) and have instead developed their own variant, the TIE Silencer which, by default, features deflector shields, hyperdrive, and missile launchers.
