"Is it bad that I get a somewhat smug feeling flying these Phantoms around? To be sitting on the afterburners of some schmuck Sith pilot who thinks he's being sneaky and then blast him out of space at just the right moment? Is that what happiness feels like?" - Shriv Suurgav regarding the TIE Phantom.
The TIE Phantom was a secret weapon developed by the Empire during the Galactic Civil War. Intended as the perfect ambush fighter, the TIE Phantom was intended to scout potential targets as well as ambush and destroy Rebel Forces without ever being seen. Their cloaking device rendered them completely invisible to sensors as well as to the naked eye making it easy for the Phantoms to easily sneak up on a target and get in several devastating shots before the target could get their shields up. Fortunately for the Rebellion, the TIE Phantoms were practically destroyed before they could be utilized in large numbers, all thanks to the actions of the Rebel Pilot classified as Rookie One who, along with another Rebel agent, infiltrated the secret TIE Phantom production facility and destroyed not only the facility but also a large majority of the Phantoms. Unfortunately the Phantom they stole in the process was rigged with a self-destruct so the cloaking device could not be reverse-engineered by the Rebellion and their stolen fighter was lost.
Despite the loss of the production facility, at least two hundred TIE Phantoms remained in Imperial control. TIE Phantoms were relegated to long range stealth shuttles for Imperial Intelligence Agents and even Darth Vader was given a handful of these fighters for his 501st Legion. Grand Admiral Thrawn was given a large number of Phantoms as well for his operations in the unknown regions. After the Empire fell, the few Imperial Warlords aware of the Phantoms scrambled to try and get their hands on them, if anything for their cloaking devices. Several warlords attempted to salvage the cloaking device and install them on their personal shuttles to be able to escape without detection should the Rebels/New Republic appear to take them down. A few warlords managed to escape this way but were eventually tracked down.
By 28 ABY, only a handful of original Phantoms remained, and all of them in possession of the 501st Legion. Anakin Skywalker used one of the TIE Phantoms in a covert mission to rescue a pair of Alderaan natives that had been captured by pirates and mercenaries. He was forced to scuttle the fighter after its hyperdrive was damaged but not before transferring the cloaking device and an assortment of vital parts to the Millennium Falcon, leaving the Falcon with the cloaking device installed. The other Phantoms are kept under tight guard by the 501sts in Bast Castle on Vjun. The 501st has been known to loan the Phantoms to the New Republic for high priority scouting runs though.
There are still a number of Phantoms floating around the galaxy but their cloaking devices have been long since removed or damaged beyond repair. These Phantoms have been nicknamed "Faux-Phantoms" or "Fantoms" and despite their lack of cloaking device, are still fairly popular with mercenaries and pirates for their speed, maneuverability, and laser cannon firepower. The empty space for the cloaking device is then typically utilized as space for a shield generator. Sienar Fleet Systems will still manufacture these Fantoms for paying clients, sometimes with a deflector shield installed.
