I guess one of documentary/candid photography is to find beauty in the moment. Most people assume that beauty lies in a carefully prepared portrait with at least an hour spent in Photoshop.

It's a Chinese cultural thing...the cover is more important then the book. That's one reason why there are so few street photogs in Taiwan...and most of them are foreigners like me.

I can understand people wanting to look their best for photographs, but
pretty and posed gets boring real fast.

Sort of. I showed her the photo and told her I thought it was a great shot (on the p&s LCD, pre-conversion) and she gave me an "eww" face.
I realized that I see things differently. Or maybe see beauty differently?

It is a great shot, without the emotive element, I like the composition, the position of the subjects, the poster and empty seat on one side, nice detail, good contrast, etc.
The emotive side, it's a sweet, intimate portrait. It makes the mommy in me go "Awww" and that's not a bad thing. It's a lovely moment
Maybe it's not seeing differently, rather seeing beauty beyond the superficial
