Description This is for 's October Batman Jam. I decided instead of trying to interpret Bats in my own imitible style (which I was having a really hard time doing) I would draw my favorite Batman costume.

And as you can see, is the Victorian Batman from Gotham by Gaslight. Another inspiration for this piece was the Mignola penned The Doom That Came to Gotham.

Anyway, if Batman here looks a little stout, it is because I was kinda trying to do Mignola, without doing Mignola. He usually draws his guys kinda squatty, so I tried to emulate that.

Enjoy.

Interesting design, it's like a batman with a lower budget, or one in the 1930s, it looks really cool.

Thanks. It's based on the design by Mignola in a book called Gotham by Gaslight.

Awesome!

I love this batman design and you pulled it off nicely man. I have been interested in picking up the dc direct figure of this, the concept is just cool.

It is one of those great comics. And it is actually the first Elseworlds story DC ran. I just love that they were willing to take a chance with one of their top three.

Thats awesome. As for the "stoutness", I like it. I like that he doesnt look like spiderman in a bat costume. Way to go!

THanks. Yeah, I think Bruce would be a somewhat beefy guy. You'd kinda have to be to be carrying thugs up onto rooftops!

I really enjoyed the "Gaslight" costumes, so it's cool to see someone go with it. I was actually expecting Dan-SCH to enter this variation, not that I'm complaining about his redesign.

Y'know, I totally thought he would too. Funny. Yeah, I just decided that I would go with something different and something that maybe no one else would think of.

Great pic mate. This is one of my fave Batman tales too. Nice work with the details on the belt and in the creases on the clothing.

Thanks, buddy. I was really trying to maintain that Mignola flavor, without totally ripping off his rendering style.

One of the best Batman costumes ever conceived, easily. Mignola knows his stuff.

As do you, might I add...

Well, thanks very much, sir. Yeah, Gaslight was my first exposure to Mignola, well, not counting his infrequent covers for X-Men or whatever.

Had great mood and a great Batman!!!

I think so too. Glad you dig it.
Have you ever read The Doom That Came to Gotham?

It's awesome.

I've seen some of the covers. Do you know if it's been collected?

BrattyBen In reply to scottygod [2007-10-21 22:37:36 +0000 UTC]

I don't. I have a friend who is able to get it off the internet. He also gave me a program that lets me read the comic on my monitor, full screen. It's pretty sweet.
The guy who did the art for the series is a guy named Troy Nixey, who, almost fooled me into thinking it was early Mignola, but, after looking at it, you can kinda see the difference.
Mignola writes it, and it has very strong Lovecraftian and Chuthulu influences. It's great how he used the different villians to create this story.

I highly reccomend it.

Awesome. I've always liked the 'stout' Batmen. They look more like they could really pulverize people.
