Description Wow, a DD!! haha, well that was unexpected yet truly appreciated!! Big THANKS to `Staged and to everyone who's viewed/favorited/commented on this as well as those who've added me to their watchlist.

I feel I should say a few things about this image as the current version of this is not what I originally submitted and differs in its realistic portrayal from the original submission quite a bit. The difference is in what I did to the image using Curves in PS. I purposefully went a little 'overboard' with the colors as I used this for a comparison document I created while working as a Tech Support agent at Corel. The latest version of Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 sports a new HDR Merge feature which I tested before the release. The document compared PSPPX2's HDR feature to the popular Photomatix which is what I prefer and still use for creating HDR images. The HDR feature in PSPPX2 is quite nice, its very fast and easy to use, much faster than any other HDR tool I've used. However, it lacks some adjustments I consider to be pretty essential and even lacks a histogram on the dialog for merging the photos. It has 2 adjustments, one for brightness and one for contrast. For many this is sufficient, for myself it is not. This isn't to say that I don't think the HDR feature in PSPPX2 is any good, and really the guy who wrote the code/algorithm for it is an amazing man who did an excellent job especially considering the amount of time it was done in. To me the problem lies with marketing people who ultimately make the decisions of what a feature will look like, based on 'marketing research' within their given 'target market'. Unfortunately, I don't think they fully understand who an HDR feature should be marketed towards, so it left the feature lacking what I would consider crucial elements. With that said, I also tested PSPPX2's HDR merge feature against PS CS3's HDR photomerge feature and found that PSPPX2's did a better a job. Being almost ten times faster on my home machine as well as producing less noise and chromatic aberrations than PS CS3. In the end, I still prefer Photomatix combined with PS for the best possible results.

To sum up, this image was used to basically say "With a few more adjustments added to the HDR feature in PSPX2, it would allow for much more creativity and flexibility making results such as this possible.". Unfortunately, it didn't get me anywhere in convincing the marketing team to have more adjustments added to the HDR feature, but it did get this image on the PSPPX2 box. You can read more about that in my journal here: [link]

HDR merge of 3 images, tonemapped, and curves.
Shot with Nikkor 17-35mm, B+W ND, and B+W graduated ND.
Kings River, Kings Canyon National Park, California.
Facing southwest, at 7:45am.

I know there are many people who are starting to feel like, HDR merging is overused and walking on a thin line between photography and photomanipulation. I sort of agree with this in some cases, which is why I only use HDR to get shots that are impossible to get otherwise. My intent is to capture a scene as close to the way I saw it as possible. To capture the feeling that I got when I composed the shot.

Kings Canyon is extremely difficult terrain when it comes to making landscape photographs. Especialy true in the case of this picture, climbing around on rocks to get vantage points like this. One slip into the river and that would have been the end of me. At the very least my camera gear would have been toast.

I hope you enjoy what I've gotten out of this trip, and that I can share with you the feeling that comes from visiting these places.

was going through my image files and remembered I did this other version. probably still not perfected, couple things I notice right off the bat I would do different these days but unfortunately I never saved a PSD of this. Perhaps I will feel like redoing the post work on this again sometime.

This photo confirms my opinion ...

I always use PSP first on photos, especially for production where time is an issue. If I need more I move on to CS3, especially for creative touches. Mainly because of add-ons from PS users that aren't available for PSP.

Sometimes I worry to admit I use tools outside of Adobe ... like I use Irfanview to resize and save png files much better than PSP or PS ... dA is so PS fixated ...

I understand the authors comments about marketing failing to understand, as former contractor to most companies as QC Engineer I have seen all products failing to be great because of them. Being a German Engineer, 99% isn't good enough, serving US standards where 70% is good enough, I felt obsolete. Which is why I am doing my own now ... to my standards.

It's actually a straightforward procedure to create a tone mapped HDR, however what is hard is getting it right.

A simple guide is to take 3 photos of the same scene at 3 different exposures. The best way to obtain these is to use a tripod and bracketed exposure on your camera. Using software like Photomatix, you import your 3 exposures and use the Tone-Mapping option and play around with it until you get the look you want.

It's a really time consuming procedure, and can be frustrating, but ultimately it's very creative and can allow for stunning results.

This is a fantastic introduction to HDR and how you can do it: [link]

I hope that was of some help

There is pros and cons here and the non HDR. Firstly, if I were you, I would use the non HDR upper part which is the sky, and paste it here, make a gradient to smooth it down.

The HDR has high chromatic abberations, which is a huge flaw, because I could see it from here very clearly.

BrianWolfe In reply to couleur [2007-06-05 17:48:51 +0000 UTC]

Thats actually what I was planning to do. Use the HDR bottom half and the normal image for the top half. Think I will be doing that soon.

As for CA, I am not sure exactly how HDR works(as far as the technical side of what it is doing to the images) but no CA exists in the normal images. This might just be a result of the different motions of the water being combined.

As always thanks for your honest feedback.

HDR images tend to create lots of noise. You can try to reduce the CA in PS CS2.

fanaticus [2007-05-31 11:47:28 +0000 UTC]

dude, this is the best HDR i've seen on DA. really. i say that because it doesn't look like HDR at all. really, great job! i like the lower half of the image much more then the upper part. it's what makes this capture special.

i think HDR was made for the same reason that you said - to make impossible shots possible. using HDR just to make an image look different is photo manipulation, IMO. also, you said in one of your posts that you maybe could've done this without HDR if you had multiple ND's. i don't get it, how would that help? you would still have gotten the walls too bright or the water too dark. right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BrianWolfe In reply to fanaticus [2007-06-01 18:43:03 +0000 UTC]

Hey, thanks a lot man! I really appreciate that!

What I meant was using multiple graduated NDs, which become gradually dark on one side. There are some really nice graduated filters out there, that reduce light up to more than 4 stops(think there are some that even reduce by 6 stops). If you were to combine a couple of graduated filters that reduce light by that many stops a shot like this would I'm sure work out pretty well.
Right now, I just have one very dense ND and and one graduated ND that reduces light by 2 stops on one half. Though the graduated one does help, in situations like this, it is not enough.

I think my new plan with this image, after having gotten some more feedback is to combine an HDR and a normal shot as I think that will resolve the issue with the mountains and sky.
