Well-executed! This is a piece poignant both in its concept and monochromatic state. Smoke and water have always come off as fluid and elegant so I wouldn't expect the union of these two elements to be all that jarring to begin with. However, I do commend you for marrying them in a way that's seems very natural, not contrived. It doesn't matter if something isn't realistic but it does matter to me if it looks natural or believable, but I digress.
The hourglass is constructed beautifully with smoke, and the fact that it's made of smoke lends an airiness to it even though water fills it and the shadow underneath it anchors it to an implied surface. Having the top half of the hourglass be a fish tank is incredibly compelling. I like that that means that these water fish aren't trapped/isolated in a time capsule; this piece would definitely feel different if the hourglass had been completely sealed. Not to mention, the splashes that extend beyond the rim of the hourglass add interest to the piece.
The fish, I must say, are most intriguing. I admire how you've sculpted the fish with water. I think water was a good choice; a smoke fish would've fallen short of the cohesiveness that the water fish bring to the piece. Forgive me for trying to read into this, but the illustrator part of me unfortunately feels the need to understand the 'story': are the fish meant to be actual fish made of water (a literal water creature) or is the water converging to form fish (an illusion)?

This is very well composed and has a great tonal balance. It is very effective in black and white and the image has great focus!Β
Out of curiosity, what is the fish made out of?Β
