Description Yes, I know - the first, original Mummy movie, from 1932, is the classic.
But I have a confession to make – I like the 1940’s sequels more!
This is an unpopular opinion among Universal Monster fans, and for good reason. As the Mummy series goes on, the movies become increasingly cheesier and cheesier… and yet – I find them increasingly fun to watch.
I totally respect the art and class and slow-paced creepiness of the original Karloff – Mummy movie. Of course I do! And yes, of course, I know - Boris Karloff as Im-Ho-Tep, was the best-looking Mummy ever.
…But the sequels had more cool scenes of klunky, clumsy, bandaged-wrapped action. The sequels always gave the Mummy more guys to strangle and cuter girls to catch and carry around. Plus there would always be a sinister cultist (usually played by Turhan Bey) sneaking about looking for nosy archaeologists to poison or stab. And during the thrilling, ending climax, you could bet the old mansion or the ancient temple would catch on fire and become a blazing inferno.
Anyway, of all those cheesy 1940’s Mummy sequels, my favorite of the bunch, is easily “The Mummy’s Tomb”, starring Lon Chaney Jr. as Kharis.
So here he is.

Ha, thanks! The honest truth is I've never been a big fan of the Mummy. Which - ironically - makes drawing him a lot of fun, because it presents the challenge of taking a lesser monster (in my opinion) and finding ways to make him every bit as bad ass as the much cooler monsters (in my opinion) like Frankenstein and Wolfman.

In my honest opinion, the best Mummy movie to date is Hammer's 1958 version! And I don't think you've done a scene from that movie, yet--Peter Cushing plunging a harpoon through Christopher Lee's torso, that's right up your alley!

Yes actually I agree, that is the best Mummy movie. Matter of fact, if you read the other comments on this illustration, I just recommended that movie to a commenter yesterday!

I was never a huge fan of the mummy no matter who played him. I get he poses the same threat as a zombie. He's slow moving and a constant threat who can strike at you when you let your guard down but really he seems like he would be so easy to get rid of or avoid. Its not like if he bites someone they become a mummy too. Its one guy with a bum leg shuffling after you. Even the laziest human being should be able to outdistance him and be able to get on some mode of transportation to safety before he can catch up.

That being said I think you did a really amazing job on him, especially the details.

Trust me, I feel the same way. The Mummy was always my least favorite of all the classic monsters. But he's part of the Universal Monsters family - so I try to find things to love about him.

Plus... as stated in my above comments, the 1940's Mummy sequels do have a certain shlocky charm. And on a final note, I actually enjoy the challenge of taking weaker, sillier, or less interesting monster characters, and using my art to try and make them cool.

That's why I liked the Brendan Fraiser Mummy movies. They were goofy but they still managed to make the Mummy a viable threat that you couldn't really escape from unless you faced him head-on.

I'm the same way with comic books, cartoons and games. I tend to favor the lesser known or B squad types than the main characters. They're more fun to draw and flesh out.

The FIRST Stephen Sommers/ Branden Frasier Mummy movie was a treat.
I hated all the sequels in that series though. I thought the sequels were downright awful.

Actually the best-made mummy movie ever - in terms of offering equal parts cinematic quality and fun, mummy action - is probably the Peter Cushing/ Christopher Lee/ Hammer Studios movie, "The Mummy" from 1959.

Yeah the first one was good but the second one with the CGI Dwayne Johnson Scorpion King was a tremendous let-down. I waited that whole movie to see Dwayne and Brendon do some kind of kick-ass sword fighting and I ended up watching a half-assed cartoon.

I hate that the same team that did them did the first GI Joe movie and screwed it up from top to bottom.

The Hammer Horror movies are just all kinds of awesome.

The AVGN did a great mini-review of Kharis when he reviewed the Mummy 1932 film for his first showing of Cinemassacre's Monster Madness.
