Just a guess, but I would bet that mask with the wolf coming out the mouth was probably inspired by a movie called "The Company of Wolves" which came out in the 80's, around the same time when these masks were popular. That movie presented the idea that werewolves are always in wolf-form, hiding inside fleshy disguises of human skin, and to transform they must push and tear their way out, like a bug bursting out of a cacoon. Very bizarre and unconventional for monster movies at that time. The shot of the wolf's snout coming out the mouth of its human face became "THE" image from that movie, appearing on ads and magazine articles and even the TV commercials. I remember being wowed by the images, but a year or so later, caught the movie on HBO and... well... I honestly don't remember much else about it. Except for a general impression that it was not the horror movie I hoped for. It was more of a weird fairy tale, and I wasn't really into it. Tho the special effects scenes were indeed interesting.

That same morphing idea was used more recently in the series "Hemlock Grove!"

yes "Company of wolves" I know that one, haven't seen it in many years but i remember the moment when all the nobles around a diner table are turning into wolves. Like you i was a bit dissapointed because the film wasn't much gory but now that i'm older i think that i should Watch it again and maybe understand more the poetry and the particular atmosphere...

Thanks! Surprisingly, the Melting Man was the easiest guy to color in this illustration! ...Although his color might look the most complex... This was one of those times when I very randomly slapped down a couple layers of color "just to see what works"... and then it was like... "Huh. Well, that's all HE needed!! ...Moving on..."
The other guys took more fiddling and experimentation.

Topstone masks I actually owned as a kid in the 80's:
"Brown Werewolf" (no longer have him, sadly);
"Fangface" (lost my original, now own a modern remake by Zagone Studios);
"Prickle Pus" and "Melting Man" (Got both of these);
"Topstone Skull" (lost this one);
And... there was another full-head, Grim Reaper type skull mask with a black hood and yellow eyes, but I can't find the actual name of it. Had that one, but lost him. I did not include him in my illustrations because I'm not 100% certain he was actually a Topstone product.
One of my childhood friends had "Henchman (aka "The Executioner") and I was always jealous because I thought that one looked scary as hell, but I could never seem to find it myself.
