I actually took this pic pretty randomly.I like how the stripes on the lamp are vertical and the stripes on the blinds are horizontal annnd I also like the lamp reflection.... lol... So here it is!
I'm new to photography so all constructive criticism is welcomed.
Please do not use my pictures without my authorization.

I like this shot, I see one little nit but we'll get to that. What works here, is the white balance is perfect, the lighting is fabulous. The horizontal and vertical stripes contrast nicely giving a beautiful juxtaposition to the whole scheme and the reflection really adds a fun depth. I like the composition cutting off the top and left of the lamp leaving us to let the mind fill in the rest, and bringing us back around the photo. All the pieces just keep your eyes going round and round without ever really leaving the frame (thats VERY good).
The one nit I have is, the blind appears to be subtly not level. It is possible this is just an optical illusion. But it is worth noting.

I agree whole heartedly with JWFisher on his critique except one thing. I took a look at the photo really closely and noticed that the bottom of the lamp shade is perfectly parallel to the window blinds. I love how the blinds are perpendicular to the lines in the lamp shade!

You gave me my first real "critique" on DA!
I noticed the blinds actually, i rotated the pic to see if it was fixable, but it isn't. When I turn it slightly the lamp becomes crooked. I think my blinds are just crooked... o.o Or my shooting angle was off.

Excellent. This one is really all about the composition. The contrast with the vertical and horizontal elements is remarkable. The awesome color of course does no harm.
The critic is right though. Try rotating the photo about 1-2 degrees clockwise in photoshop. You'll need to resize the canvas or crop the image afterwords. You can use the 'edit deviation' button to the left ---> and use the updated image as your edit.

Thanks! I'll try rotating it tomorrow to see if it looks better... But it's really hard for me to tell if it's an optical illusion or not... especially because the lamp shade does flare out slightly. You can see that on the right side of the shade, there is a light pink stripe coming down and getting bigger towards the bottom.
But then if you follow the bottom edge of the shade, the horizontal part, you see it is perfectly parallel to the blinds. So... i don't know if it is really off or not

Well, if it looks wierder after rotating, can always just undo it.

Sometimes even if something is technically level, if it LOOKS wrong, then it's the perception that counts. I think I've left some crooked horizons because the main subject did'nt look quite right when it was in reality straight.

There's two things i like most about premium.... actually 3.
You get to browse through more Deviations at once
You get to decorate your journal with a theme
You get to have polls...
That's about all i've noticed.... maybe i'm not using it to its fullest potential... but those are the things that feel "upgraded" to me.

To start, the composition of the image is very consistant.
For one - the way you've arranged the stripes of the lamp (both the actual and reflected one) almost deceive you to keep going from left to right. It's almost like those daunting wallpapers. Your subject seems to even have character. Symbolically, it seems to have characteristics close to that of a mysterious person in the front you have its shiny, up front, bright person that you do see but then you see the back, and it's dark, gloomy, maybe a person/lamp with a bad history perhaps? It borderlines a story of any person who hides the truth from others and its staggering how you managed to not have light show in the reflection to really get that darkness out the visual quality is great, the color is good as well with enough detail to show the fibers of the lamp. Overall, its great

This picture is striking! I noticed right away how the vertical stripes of the lamp shade work against the horizontal lines of the blinds behind, really pulling the eye in. The colors of the entire photograph, as well as the reflection of the base of the lamp and how it is echoed in the window seems to keep my eyes moving within the picture itself, without ever leaving the photo itself. All in all, I love this, and would love to see this as a print!
