It looks so damn good....why is it when other people draw it, it turns out better than when we try it...by we, I mean, me. hahahahaΒ

Practice practice practice. It takes 1000's of hours to be good, ask any successful artist or designer!

have you ever written a book and if so what was it called?

I'm working on several books really, architectural and not, of my own. I was officially printed in "Curse of Strahd" Ravenloft adventure/guidebook from Dungeons and Dragons/Wizards of the Coast, should be available at major bookstores and gaming stores, maybe comic stores. Illustrations were architectural, castle plan/mao, a gypsy wagon, old windmill cutaway, and more. Doing more work for them this year too, top secret, but it will be architecture!

Francois, i have a question, do you draw from the imagination or use a reference to create these illustrations?
Sorry, i speak english as Tarzan :/

Built4ever In reply to Aurrera [2016-02-09 16:49:46 +0000 UTC]

Most castles and cities like this are drawn completely from imagination. In some cases I might take a quick look at a few picture on the internet, for example, if I want to look at how a Chinese roof is shaped, or to check medieval fortifications on top of a wall, or something, which I just look at, commit to memory, and proceed. But this castle, Castle Iventorr, was drawn from scratch, no reference really. Tarzan English is okay! Better than the chimp. Thanks!

Thank you, this tutorial has given me ideas on how I could draw a city scape for a larger drawing that has been daunting me! Will you be creating anymore tutorials?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Built4ever In reply to dragonsbane15 [2014-01-25 13:56:32 +0000 UTC]

Maybe. I guess I haven't done a city yet, that's more spread out. You saw the "Ursidea" city I posted a few weeks ago? I'm also drawing a village for that same person. Cities are challenging because of the sheer magnitude of different structures.

Plus, I get asked to do these. I just have to stop myself in the middle of drawing these and scan them. I have never taught professionally.

Actually, you should join queeky.com and do one of these... its one of those sites that lets you "play back" your drawings so you can watch the entire process in detail.

its not the only site like that, but queeky is my favorite, their in-browser paint is really easy to use (not at all like DA Muro... ahem)

just thought i should mention.

ooh a WIP! so this is what happens huh? i still honestly don't get how the render is so neat and sharp ;A; i usually end up erasing a hole in the paper or something i'm trying to get a sketch to neaten up!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Built4ever In reply to aNNaMaL97 [2012-11-23 02:22:23 +0000 UTC]

When the paper is getting wrecked, get some tracing paper and redraw over it. I can't go too far either before I have to scrap a drawing because of erasing and re-drawing. Also, draw with light pencils first, 2H or 4H...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

aNNaMaL97 In reply to Built4ever [2012-11-23 20:05:36 +0000 UTC]

ah thanks for the advice ^^~ hm yeah...tracing paper- my friends tell me to use normal file paper instead of catridge since it erases neater because it doesn't have a grain smoother surface i suppose.... but cartrige paper...feels...more...arty.....[shot]
