Description Hurr hurrr here's the little watercolour effect tutorial for Paint Tool SAI. It might work with other light programs, too. It might be a little confusing, I couldn't focus well when I was doing this... But if there are any parts you don't understand, feel free to ask for help. :]

I used this effect on my Okami fanart which was completely made in SAI.

Sorry to bother but how do you do the splatter effect? Does it need to use some kind of brush or what?

I'm so sorry for this epicly late response, I was taking a little break from dA... xD;; But *just in case* you're still wondering, the splatter effect was made simply by drawing with a normal brush/marker tool.

This is pretty cool.

Is there some way you could illustrate what you did in part three? I am using GIMP instead of SAI, so I need some sort of visual so that I can figure out how to work out the difference in available options.

Sorry for the epicly late response >:

I'm not sure which part you mean in #3, buuuuut if it's the part where you need to do ''draw big and small and sharp and soft shapes around the canvas'', I quickly did something with Muro to show what I meant [link] It's very poorly made and might confuse even more, though. But basically you just draw the splatter things around the spot where you have the ''watercolour effect''. I'm really bad at explaining, my apologies. >8

You can do the same things in GIMP but of course you need to use blur and other tools a lot. I'm positive the result will be similar. : D

I really love this tutorial! But I don't understand the splatter effect? And do I have to use the tool: ''Water'', ''Water 9'' or ''Water 10''???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bunnypirates In reply to Chrisszilla [2011-03-20 16:54:33 +0000 UTC]

You'll use the Marker tool, if we're talking about the same phase. o.o

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chrisszilla In reply to bunnypirates [2011-03-20 17:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Yes I think we're talking about the same but you have to use an other tool to get that Watercolour effect right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bunnypirates In reply to Chrisszilla [2011-03-20 17:52:04 +0000 UTC]

Are you talking about the brushes or the effect itself? If you're talking about the effect only, it's on the phase #4 (on the bottom). Paints Effect -> Choose a texture.

Chrisszilla In reply to bunnypirates [2011-03-20 17:53:26 +0000 UTC]

I'm talking about the brushes... I get confused really quick with that!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

bunnypirates In reply to Chrisszilla [2011-03-20 18:05:47 +0000 UTC]

Okay then! :3 So. You only need Marker and the Paints Effects -> Choose Texture. Nothing else. Everything is there. If you have a fan-made pack, the settings and names of tools etc. might be different, but it all should be there. ^^ I hope this answered your question. : D

ah! i was just playing with this yesterday-- i really like the effects you got, but ive never been a fan of the texture of watercolor paper, so i tried using other ones.
