Description Shperical vessel 10cm diameter. Sculpted texture and pinched fins added.

The glaze was one entitled Odd Shino! The technitian couldn't work out quite what went wrong, but it came out as a grey green satin glaze. I Use a lot of silicon carbide in my work to add texture. I'm too lazy to acurately measure amounts of sc added to various glazes, so I tend to press sc into leather hard clay, brush it on as a soloution onto the bisque fired ware before glazing or mix random amounts into small volumes of glaze. With this one I brushed it on as a solution under the Odd Shino and it came out as a glittering gold colour. Unfortunately as my methods are somewhat haphazard the next time I tried it, it came out as a dull oatmeal! Oh well, just makes the successes even more precious!

I do love your ceramics, and your apparant affinity with sea-animals... such a cool combination!
I really like the colors you use. All we have in my ceramics class are fairly boring low-fire glazes, and I much prefer the look you have going in your gallery

Ah yes, I much prefer stoneware to earthenware. I can get some recipes if you're interested. They're fired at 1260c if your college will let you fire that high. The other option is to add extra ingredients, ether mixed in or sprinkled on top of the glazes you are using and then see what happens! You can always fire using a sagar if you're nervous about damaging other work in a communal kiln!

well, the teacher only buys low-fire clay.. not sure what temp it goes to but I doubt we go much more then 2000 F... I would be interested in recipes though for when I get to do more advanced work!

Ok, give me a shout if you can persuade your teacher to get some stoneware clay! Your college may have a small test kiln that they would be willing to fire at a higher temp. If they have, a bag of clay dosen't cost much.....

well, we're a mere highschool, so probably not, but thanks a lot anyway! only two kilns where once we had three

oooo! your urchin-like creations are nice! I was shocked to see them as I make something similar, but mine are crude and lack the finished quality of your obvious experience. My husband calls them 'space balls'. If I could be more consistant on the wheel (or make a mold?) I might improve the perfection of the sphere since the fun part is the carving and adding of textures. Is this stoneware?

THANK YOU for inspiring me to keep at it.

ps: I love the chino glaze I use: goes from orange used very thinly to white-ish and orange peeled and pitted when on thick. Very interesting to play with. I could share it if you'd like to try it....

Thank you so much for your comments. I gave up on the wheel long ago....there just isn't enough spare time to get really good at it, which frustrates me, so I don't bother! I use a home-made plaster mould that I cast over half a polystyrene ball....you know the type, you're meant to pin sequins to it to make Xmas decorations.
This piece is stoneware. I like to use silicon carbide for the bubbles texture that only works at high temps. And yes, I'd love to see your shino recipe....I'm always up for something new!

Gorgeous shape with a glaze that really brings out the organic characteristics of the piece - even if the result was rather experimental!

The 'haphazard method' paid off, though; the glaze is very very pretty. It really does look like a sea creature!

I really love how raw this one looks, I am really just getting started exploring ceramics, but Ive always loved it enough to make it my focus for my major. I suppose I aspire to be able to create stuff like this
