Description Raku (turquoise/copper crackle) Crank clay, 23.5cm across.

My entry for the Artisan Crafts Mythology contest [link] I think I've just managed to scrape in in time!

This is one of my larger pieces and is based on the Roman God of the sea, Neptune. I like to think that this is the sort of thing he might keep his fruit in!

Very beautiful bowl, and I LOVE the texturing!
I saw this in Shadowfoxpaw's news article on "Wonderful Artisan Crafts" ( I'm there too ^____^ ), and I've have to say, this was my favorite piece shown.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but I did a search online to see what crank clay was, and all I'm coming up with is a place that sells it online. What it is, and what's the difference between it and other fire hardened clays?

this is fantastic! the uneven edges really add to the shell-like feel of the piece. how did you get that texture?!

c-urchin In reply to nyankorita [2007-05-30 22:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Ah that wouls be telling

....I used a plaster mould, spread the clay on the inside and used a pointed wooden tool to make holes and impress the texture into the clay. I guess it's all just a bit of experimentation, but if you make the texture while the clay is still in the mould, you have more room to pierce the clay without it distorting too much.

Great piece! I love the pierce work....looks like hard work! Did you lose other pieces trying to do it? I've found pierced work very fragile to do.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

c-urchin In reply to dragonfireartz [2006-11-21 19:48:41 +0000 UTC]

Ah....it's easier than it seems....I leave the bowl in the plaster mould and pierce through, which makes the process a lot less fragile. It also makes an interesting texture on the outside. I shall, when I get a chance, upload some close-ups of the different textures. Thanks for the fav!

dragonfireartz In reply to c-urchin [2006-11-26 04:24:21 +0000 UTC]

Great idea....though doesnt it damage your mould? Though I suppose that could add to the textural look of the piece anyway. I'd love to see some close ups of the piece. What kind of finish are you using...is it a barium matt glaze or oxides? It looks really great.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

c-urchin In reply to dragonfireartz [2006-11-26 19:38:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it does damage the mould a bit, but most of my work is pretty textured and "raw" so I don't really mind....obviously I wouldn't do it with someone elses mould though!

The glaze is a raku copper/turquoise crackle....I shall try to upload some details, I was having problems withthe new system.

I love the colour and texture of the piece.

I'm assuming it was handbuilt, so am I right guessing it was coiled? How did you make the raised patterns on the bottom? They look so lovely!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

c-urchin In reply to Hivemind-Inc [2006-11-14 19:40:02 +0000 UTC]

Hi there, no, it's far simpler than that...I have a plaster mould, the clay is pressed in and I make all of the textures on the inside of the bowl. The texture on the outside of the bowl results from piercing the clay and twistin the tool while it's still in the mould. A happy accident that I have then developed.
I have anothe bowl ready to be photographed and uploaded when I have the time. I't's a little more lacy than tis one. Thanks for the fav and watch!

Hivemind-Inc In reply to c-urchin [2006-11-14 19:54:53 +0000 UTC]

Wow, I didn't think of that at all. I'd say it's very successful and looks fabulous. I'm doing a project right now on hand-built ceramics and the traditions behind it, and the technique you're describing sounds a bit like that of ancient potters in South America and Africa with draping over a mould (usually a vessel/pot previously made).

And you're very welcome.

That's an interesting description! I guess this one is less random than some of my other work. I was inspired by Noases [link] circular designs, but still came out looking more like mine!
