I watched the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie and I was inspired by the mermaids in there; they were so beautiful and elusive. waaaah. Unfortunately, I didn't capture the type of allurement they exuded.Forgive me for such a suckish painting. Improvement doesn't occur unless I overcome these shitass drawings...

Cactusrain, just because it wasn't exactly what you were going for, doesn't meant it sux or isn't a success.
Please realize that your little mermaid has an ethereal beauty and sorrow all her own, such that could only come from your own hand. The fact that she doesn't look like something from a movie makes her even more special and uniquely your own creation. Be proud of her!
I once was taken to task by an art teacher because she thought I was not humble enough. (I was 13 or 14 years old at the time. LOL!!) But the opposite end of the spectrum is not healthy either. So no more excuses or apologies for your work. It's always good to be modest and humble, but never put yourself down like this.
I have come to realize that even if I am drawing a model's face, it doesn't matter one little bit if it isn't her exact portrait when I am done. She was simply a model... an inspiration, a starting point.

I hear ya. I haven't seen the movie but I understand the inspiration and the suckish... I feel the same way about my work most of the time. I know I can do better. Anyway, I think you did a good job on this.
Have you seen one of the latest Peter Pan's? I was absolutely thrilled with their mermaids. If you haven't seen it, you must!

Can't say I'm a fan of the POTC series of movies but I think this is really quite good. Her facial features are sharper than the surroundings and brings the focus to where it is needed - her pretty visage!
Being a fellow perfectionist I can sympathize with your description of your work - we are always harder on our own creations than others will be. You're very talented and this is a great picture
