Alptraum was living 200 years ago in the Mansion in Hollow Shades' village where Lost Bones lives. In fact, she's the ghost hunting it.
When she was a young filly, Alptraum injured her leg while playing. It got infected and they had to cut off her leg to save her. She became became the scapegoat of all her village, having no friends, being laughed at...kids can be very cruel.
It was even worse because even when she became a young mare, she was still a blank flank. Sad, depressed and discouraged, she killed herself in her room. The next part you know it, hunting the mansion, cursing Lost Bones and killing the young ponies coming across her territory, because she hates fillies.
Recently, Hell Gate, the prince of the underground kingdom (hell) released her from her hatred with the help of Night Mage and FallOut and hired her as his Queen of Nightmares, some kind of bogeyman.
