Description
This is a guy I've been working on when I've had spare time for the past several months. I kept the style fairly loose and painterly, the background tree is based on a photo I took in Japan in 2008 of a rain-soaked tree in a forest. This is part of a series of paintings I'm planning as part of a larger illustration project showcasing my original griffin and creature designs, in a sort of travel journal format. I'm still in the planning stages, but I'm hoping to make real progress on it this year!

This little guy is a Cardinal Griffin, so-named for its resemblance to the Earth bird. A tiny species, Cardinals only grow to be about two feet from beak to tail tip, with a short four-foot wingspan well suited to darting between tree branches. Curious and flighty, they travel in small flocks feeding on insects and small rodents.
