So yeah, I have a sudden urge to animate today. Whipped this up in about an hour and a half. This will be turned into an animated icon for my brother *ReyTiger and features his fursona, an anthropomorphic Tiger.

Both Rey, and my brother in real life, are "Traceurs" so I wanted to give him a cool icon to use. As far as I know, no one has animated anthro (digitigrade) doing parkour/freerunning so haha, take that bitches! Practically no video reference for this either so I'm pretty proud of it considering.

But I need some critiques. It'll be a bitch and a half to size this down for DA (the color version anyway) but I want some feedback on the movement. I'm going to work on another version in the meantime since I was thinking about changing some things. I don't quite like how he does a backflip twice and I'd kinda like to include the trademark Parkour roll in there...

So I'm wondering if I should change it so he's running infinitely to the right: Start the animation at the vault and when he cats the wall on the right, instead of a backflip 180, he'll keep going right and drop down to a roll and then immediately repeat the vault. I'm also adding camera movement, this is just so you can see the overall scene. The other suggestion is instead of a wall flip 180, change it to a wall spin... just for some variety.

I was thinking of maybe getting a close-up of his face at some point too... but since I worked so hard on the movement (not to mention I have a HUGE time/size constraint) I'm not sure I'll put that in there.

Feedback please! :3

Goodness! You gave me quite a response, it's only natural that I return the favor. Thank you so very much for all your feedback! I'm very humbled that you thought so highly of my work here. I shall most certainly not disappoint you with my future animations

I'll get started on the next few tests so we can have some comparisons before I move on to the final concept. Glad you like my flipies, they were quite a challenge

Well, I give credit where it's deserved, and you're certainly earning my kudos, there. **Grins, Nods** I don't take the critique job lightly, so I'm pretty much the stickler...but so far you've been FAR above the Average of 2.5 Stars, and you're keeping yourself firmly planted there.

Keep it up, li'l sister, you're making me very proud!

Now come on over and share a hot chocolate or something. **Laughs** You never know when I'll be able to actually do that in real life...

...maybe this September...**Pondering a new convention to observe**

Hot chocolate sounds lovely! In fact, I think I'm gonna go get my brother and see if he wants some too.

Ooohoho, reeeeeally now? :>>

I'll be about in DreamStormingJams for another hour or so...Draga's there for a while too...just going over the Pokemorphic Roleplay stuff I'm planning to try to get together next month...but also just to hang out.

As for conventions, since The Gathering of the Gargoyles ended this year, I really should get myself into another small convention with a few friends to show me the ropes...I should check out Nan Desu Kan, it seems like it would be small, has a lot more cosplayers (something that kinda fascinates me, being kind of an actor and former radio personality), and I've got friends in the area...so it's tempting to throw down a Coin Hoard and get a ticket to come on up....

But it's far too soon for me to commit to anything...YET.

Animation, the greatest and most difficult thing one can do I think. Honestly... I think that this is extremely good, it isn't jumpy and jumpy motions in an animation is not good. I'm no animation expert, so i'll jusy say keep doing what yah are doing and maybe you can blow us away with your epic animations in the near future!

P.S. I'm faving this; too look back on to see how far you progressed throughout the years.

I can't wait to see this finished! :'D
Hmm.. needs to be a squidge more... elastic? Like, more bounce in the movement, especially when he lands on something or makes a hard contact with another object. Otherwise, this will be flippin' sweet! It must be really, REALLY hard to animate these rough sketches- moreover, an anthro tiger running and leaping all over the screen!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CanineHybrid In reply to Trustthapo [2009-12-28 07:50:13 +0000 UTC]

Me neither, I'm excited to work on it some more
I agree with you completely... I had infinite amount of struggling with the landings and transitions of movement.... I must have redrawn the landing of the 180 backflip at least 7 times. I think I'm gonna try to get some actual reference footage of my brother to iron out the kinks.

It is rather difficult, but the hardest part of timing and movement is pretty much over. All that's left is the time-consuming part XD Thanks for all your comments!

>.> So like I cant right a crit the right way so here you go:

So very interesting idea you are going with! Liking it.
But if it was me, I would personal ruff the animations out in 3d first so that you may get the camera perspective as well as the animation down pat.
Though you may not have the means for this and I understand so as another option, keep ruffing out many camera angles, then you can mix them together with ease for the final.

I think the ruining with the volt at the start would work best for an icon. It will flow a lot easier to.

Good work so far though this will be interesting to watch develop.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CanineHybrid In reply to Nakoo-The-Tauren [2009-12-28 07:46:41 +0000 UTC]

lawl, any crit is better than nothing XD

Thank you for your suggestions! Unfortunately my computer is out of commission therefore I'm unable to have access to 3DsMax for awhile. Hmmm, roughing it out in 3d is peculiar to me because traditionally you have some sort of a drawn concept for your base/reference, even as simple as a storyboard. But I'm liking this 2d experimenting for the movement and timing before transferring it to 3d... at least, that's how I'm currently planning to develop my workflow.

However I see your confusion: I'm not planning to take this animated icon into a 3D camera environment. What I mean by camera tracking is simply that I crop the area of the existing canvas to be only a square (the character would fill the frame) and then I follow him. It would simply be a tighter shot vs this overall view presented in the test. It'll be stuck as a boring side-view for now for the traditional animation version.

However! I do plan to take Rey to 3D someday and he would be the prime candidate for the coolio character animation and movement I've been wanting to experiment with. I have a long way to go still as I want to make sure I master the technique of creating a good mesh in order for the model to be animated correctly. I plan to start learning Maya on my own soon as I hear that's the program of choice for advanced character animation :3

The way you make the models/animation is really up to witch method will be best for the project.
Though most of the time you are right. Even if I don't normally do it that way, when I am told to

The programs them selves don't matter what dose is you over all polly count.
Coming from the games side, the lower the better!
But if you are going for animation/Character work side of things that doesn't matter at all.
Again the best thing to do is ruff it out many many times. It will not only help you see flaws but it will make you think of things you woulnd't have normally.

Also this is defiantly going to be an interesting character to see develop in 3d!
